  • Toy Fair 2008

It's that wonderful time of year again; time for the annual Toy Fair. What is the Toy Fair? Every year in Feburary most of the toy companies (ex. Mattel and Hasbro) go to New York and show off their latest toys to the press and more importantly, the toy buyers for companies like WalMart and Toys R Us.

This year I'm looking forward to seeing what Hasbro has in store for Star Wars. They have already revealed that they are making a AT-TE. The AT-TE is the Republic Walker seen in Episodes II and III. It is rumored to be huge and impressive. The price tag is going to be $100. Also they will be unveiling the Clone Wars toys.

I'll keep an eye open on the web for any coverage of Disney related products, like Mattel's Cars toys and Thinkaway's Wall E product.

If you are into toys like I am this is the place to talk about what you are seeing online and to point out any links to sites that have coverage of anything you think is cool. Toy Fair starts today and runs through most of next week.

Yes! Keep us updated! I know my boyfriend is watching www.tfw2005.com for Transformers updates. Not sure if they will post anything else on there or not.

The new Star Wars clone wars figures wil be in an animated style. I am undecided if I like them or not.

right now it is still early and most sites have little up. I'll keep watching.

Right now WizardUniverse has the best coverage. I am not impressed with Hasbro's Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull figures. The faces of principal actors are not good.

Star Wars is doing a neat build a droid promotion with their basic figures. You get pieces of droids in your figures and can build a whole droid with them. The first wave is going to be Return of the Jedi based and feature Luke, Han, and Chewie, but will also include an ewok, an ewok baby, Yarna, and several other briefly appearing characters.

I've found more coverage. The AT-TE from Star Wars looks really cool. The prequel era spider droid is coming out this year. Also a new Rancor from the Force Unleashed.

In Gi Joe figures it looks like we are getting Spirit, a Cobra Viper, and a Cobra B.A.T.

In Marvel figures I have seen a Fin Fang Foom figure. Its huge. I'm guessing that it is a build a figure. A build a figure is a figure that you get parts for it in each figure from the wave and put it together. Usually it is a figure that is too large to be packed by itself.

I have not found any Disney related product yet, but I will let you know when I see it.

Well things have calmed down a little. There is pretty good coverage of line like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Marvel Superheroes (Legends and movie lines), GI Joe and Transformers. I have not seen anything from companies like Mattel, NECA, McFarlane, other small companies.

A couple tidbits I have gotten from the web.

            1. Marvel Toys, formerly known as Toy Biz, is cancelling their line of figures called Legendary Heroes. This line had superheroes from smaller companies like Image. They were pretty cool figures so that is a shame. However, from what was said it looks like they may be working for Hasbro soon. Could this mean an improvement in the Marvel Legends, which many have felt have suffered since Hasbro obtained the license. This is just my thought, not fact.

            2. Tonner Dolls has got a great Elizabeth Swann from POTC coming. Here is a link to a pic. http://www.tonnerdoll.com/2008Tonner...highseases.jpg
They are also doing Mary Poppins dolls.

            3. My favorite GiJoe thing I have seen so far is a return of the Motorcycle with the mini gun on the side. I still have mine from the 1980's.

figures.com finally has coverage of NECA. Amongst the products are figures of Beetlejuice and Regan from the Exorcist. Harry Potter fans will be excited to see figures of the Richard Harris Dumbledore and Mad-Eye Moody. I got excited when I saw the figure of MACHETE! Also fans of the Princess Bride will love the Dread Pirate Roberts figure.

Mattel coverage is finally here. Lots of neat new Cars coming. In the DC Universe line Wonder Woman and Cyborg are coming soon. The most interesting line is called DC Universe Infinite Heroes. It is a 3 3/4 inch line of figures that is going to have a lot fo variety of characters.

I just preordered the Gandalf figure but hmm... is it me or does it not look anything like Ian McKellen?

Another line I'm totally excited about is sideshow's 12" G.I.Joe line! But at a price tag of $80... it better be good.

I have to admit, the likeness on the Gandalf does not look a lot like Ian McKellan. It's still a great figure. I am really tempted by the Clone Wars Obi-wan, but I think the wallet will not take the load.

I imagine you got one. Sideshow is going to be getting a lot of your money this week. And you thought Cars was bad.

One thing I have noticed is a lack of coverage of what people would consider "Girl's toys" like Barbie. Well, I just did a little searching and found some. It looks like Barbie is going to do more superhero based dolls. With Mattel's relationship to DC comics that is not surprising. It looks like Barbie is going to dress as Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl and my favorite, Black Canary. Hooray for Fishnets! They are pretty nice actually, no where near as nice as Tonner Dolls DC dolls, but I am sure they will be no where near the price. There are also some other very pretty non-DC dolls too, but I'll let you look at them. Here is a link.

Here is another Barbie I came across, TV Chef Barbie.

Apparently EA games is making a Littlest Pet Shop video game.

Here is a neat article with a video of more toys, including the Furreal Friends, Biscuit the Pup. And you thought Butterscotch the Pony was cute. That Hannah Montana doll is kind of creepy though.
