  • [Idea] Autopia out....we need something new...

Unlike my last thread about Disneyland, this one isn't a joke. Something needs to be done with Autopia, even if it means taking it out.

Now, I know it was an original 1955 ride (sort of), but last time I was on it, i literally had to put the force of a brick on to the pedal. Also, the ride itself is just not too interesting. The cars look as outdated as everything on the ride. I extremely hate the animated sign for Autopia. Cheveron messed it up for me.

Put in a new ride, Autopia isn't really a ride of tomorrow. We have cars, and its not like Autopic cars aren't using gas...they are! If they were electric...or even hybrid cars, I'd see more meaning in the ride.

What would be put there in it's place? I don't know...maybe a new dark rides based on Wall-E (I wouldn't mind that) or perhaps a "virtual reality" version of "Rocket to the Moon" but maybe this time we go farther...

So much could be done with that area. Even keeping the same ride but upgrading the cars and cutting down on the fumes. I'm hoping this is on the plans when they revamp Tomorrowland.

Flying saucers and a much better track is what I'd like to see.

(Hopefully WALL-E will have some representation somewhere in TL).

I'd hate to see it go, but it really does need an upgrade...

Autopia is one of the things in DL that should be sacred. Yes, it may seem like a waste of space, but it's a classic. It's always got a large line with both adults and kids in it and kids love the fact they can drive. Implode the Carousel Theater and leave Autopia alone.

Didn't Mr Lutz mention a possible Honda tie-in with electric cars and maybe a collision free cut off of power?

If Autopia were to go away, permenently, I'd be in favor of a new aliens-themed dark ride....original characters, say a trip to the moon or another planet and weird alien life there, just let the Imagineers go wild on it. Kind of like ET was over at universal, but more quirky and fun perhaps...and a film tie-in. Disneyland could use a elaborate new original dark ride.

Autopia IS far too popular to pull the plug on.
I say convert the vehicles to all electric ala Hong Kong, partition the track off from Tomorrowland and reopen the Fantasyland entance. to the kids, it IS a fantasy experience.
Level the carousel of regress and reopen a 'Flying Saucer' attraction while rebuilding the pollution-free People Mover along the route of its existing track.

This is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt, but I believe autopia is futuristic for children. Children that legally cannot drive a vehicle are given a license and are allowed to drive how they want. At least thats how it was to me when I was a kid. I always thought " In the future I will get to do this for real" i know its a stretch but for children, maybe autopia is futristic, not becuase of old cars or gasoline, but the future of those childrens lives.

Power cut off? Do they have to suck the fun out of everything!

You know it's the best part if you know the person in the car in front of you!!!

I 'll throw the kid a bone on this one.

Although if they could be made electric...

People over 16 are always looking to close down Autopia. Not nearly as magical to drive one of these when you can sit in traffic on I-405 or race faster than the posted speed limit driving down I-5 from Nor Cal. But it is one of the most magical experiences for kids. I loved jamming my foot against the pedal and letting my little ones "drive."

Never liked Autopia as a kid, dont like it now. We need to tear that sucker out or make it a whole lot more futuristic/thrilling.

There should be some concepts on here floating around as to how to improve it. The main issue is that portions of it sit above Subs and therefore whatever is placed on it needs to be light.

Just by putting in more visually appealing scenery could do wonders for the area. Think a small tunnel, a few small, mountain passes (In the back, well hidden from the eyes of people from the Matterhorn to IASW) and maybe electric cars would do great for this area. The only trouble I have with electric cars is that it is a technology that isn't really that futuristic. I know they aren't abundant, but they have been around a while. That said, I think the main problem would be coming up with a futuristic vehicle that won't be cartoonish that will please the older crowd (ie: make them forget about rush hour traffic) while keeping the same basic ride/track layout/driving experience (money is always an issue, they won't tear it out and start from scratch) and keeping the fun for younger park goers that just want to drive a car.
