  • [Question] Why are there so many number 42's in DL?

I have noticed over the last few years that the number 42 reappears in many places in DL. Does anyone know why?

I've noticed it on a door inside of Roger Rabbit, in Space Mtn., in Buzz. Many places, not just those 3. I wondered if there's a significance, or, if it's just a coincidence!

42 is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything... did you not know?
      42 is the answer

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. It's so werid that you would post this because while we were at Disneyland this trip we were talking about the same thing!!
I drew the same conclusion that mycroft16 did. I think all imagineers are secret or not so secret nerd (like most of us) and they've read the amazing work of Douglas Adams.
I feel like it's in the park too often for it to be a coincidence

Uh, no, I did not know or I wouldn't have started a thread, right? I've not seen the Hitchhiker's Guide.....or read the book.

Now, back to DL, and, why it's used there so much.

But, the book was written in 1978, and, the things I've seen go further back than that.

The answer you're looking for is indubitably 42.

Beyond that, I can be of no help.

Ok... I apologize for my sense of humor. But I was actually being serious at the same time. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a piece of cultural history. Most of nerd-dom (and let's face it... the kind of people who become Imagineers have just a bit of nerd/geek in them) have read them and love them deeply for their unique yet intelligent humor.

This is why I posted what I did... I'm sorry if my slightly oddball, off the wall sense of humor did not come through. I didn't mean to offend you I Heart Disneyland. I was not attempting to derail the thread or not talk about Disneyland at all.

Can you post a list of all the locations you can think of and maybe we can figure out if they are original to the location or were added after as a joke.

No offense taken, and, if that IS the origin...that's awesome, I'm not familiar with these books myself. (But, don't count me out as a nerd!)

I believe I saw one on a door inside of the queue for Roger Rabbit, one on Space Mtn, one on Buzz....and....I can't think of the others but will give it thought. I've noticed it for years, and, I remember my son and his friend pointing them out when they were teens back in the 90's, so, it's been quite some time that I've noticed them. I've just come back from DL and those are the 3 I recall from this trip. I will be back soon and will write them down next time.

I haven't ever noticed them. Can we get our oh so talented MiceChat photographers to get some photographic documentation of this phenomenon?

Now, not only do I have hidden Mickeys to find... but hidden 42s.

Re: Why are there so many number 42's in DL?

All three attractions (including the recent re-do of Space Mountain) came long after the original Hitchhiker's Guide (not the later Disney version) became a cult hit, and I'd be very surprised if there weren't lots of HHGTTG fans among the Imagineers. So there's a very good chance that some, if not all, are direct references to the Ultimate Answer To Life, The Universe, And Everything (which turns out to be 42).

And HHGTTG started out as a radio show, then the books, then the British TV Series.

Hey everyone, long time lurker here. I haven't noticed 42's in Space Mountain or BLAB yet, but I definitely saw it in the queue Roger Rabbit. I ended up taking a picture of it because of an inside joke between me and a couple of friends. Never knew a topic about it would pop up on MiceChat.

Hmm, maybe we can unearth a park-wide conspiracy, similar to what we did with the New Orleans grand master backstory, that was fun!
