  • Why do they only celebrate christmas at Disneyland?

I hear that question many times. I though a thread was started about this a while back, but I did not find it. Well any way, Disneyland does not celebrate Christmas or any religious holiday for that matter. The celebration of Christmas is the celebration of Christs birth. Disneyland does not celebrate it though. They just celebrate "The Holidays". I just wanted to clear that up. If I am wrong please help me.

But anyone going there knows they're basically celebrating the Hallmark version of Christmas. Lots of decorations, presents, and other junk that has nothing to do with the real holiday or any other holiday.

Yes that is true. I think that version is something everyone can relate to because there are no religious symbols anywhere in the park and plus no rides have the actual word "Christmas" in them. So even though it is a Hallmark Cristmas, I think it lets everyone have the freedom to not get offended due to their religious point of views.

Honestly, many people celebrate the commercial "Christmas" holiday regardless of faith the same way Christians celebrate the commercial Halloween holiday.

The whole white christmas, tree ornaments, cookies, and that kind of thing...

Kind of sad but in a place like Disneyland, I think it's best.

People that are Athiests celebrate Christmas. It's meaning is lost.

Us, were kind of in the middle. We embrace the "Hallmark" version, without forgetting the real reason of the day.

Exactly. That is what I tried to say in post 1. Disneyland is not celebrating anything religious at all. They are just celebrating the big corporate commercialized version.

Yeah, they're taking the "safe" approach, which is probably for the best.

On the Disney channel, at least from every holiday season I've seen, they put in their commercials, "Happy Kwanza (sp?), Merry Christmas, Happy...from Disney!" So it's bot like the company totally brushes off all of the holidays.

For the same reason that the rest of corporate America celebrates Christmas, it's a generic seasonal holiday.

[Edit: Oops, hehe... I didn't read the whole thread but my post is basically saying the samething that's already been said. And FYI, the earlier post you were probably looking for was in regards to why Disney doesn't celebrate Chanukah.]

The same reason why they celebrate Halloween. Halloween is actually a spiritual holiday. The All Hallow's Eve...

Santa's there at Disneyland for the "Holidays" ..... and I don't think he's there for the Hanukkah celebration.....

to clarify - that Santa's presence there means its Christmas, not some generic 'Holidays'.

additional commment 1: not to infer Santa is that tightly correlated to what Christmas is all about anyways

additional commment 2: there are some less obvious signs that Hanukkah is being celebrated too at DLR. The Main Street door of Dr. Benjamin Silverstein has a shiny silver mezuzah.

additional commment 3: many other religious Holidays like Easter have pins available as souvenirs, uhhh, i mean, remembrances too.

Actually, is the Candlelight Processional a very religious ceremony/event? I've never actually watched it, but last year I was at the parks while it was going on and I recall hearing what I thought were scriptures from the Bible.
So by offering the Candlelight Processional, Disney is clearly celebrating Christmas.

But aside from that, nothing about Disney's decorations or festivities are related to one specific religion and "it's a small world" has all of the winter holidays celebrated. The holiday decorations, however, really have no meaning and those directly related to Christmas (the majority of them) really have lost all meaning and significance except for their value in dollar signs.

I must admit, the Hallmark version of Christmas makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and when Disneyland does it- its even better!

As MasterGracey states, Disneyland does indeed celebrate a VERY religious Christian Christmas with the Candlelight Ceremony. Apparently, no one here has attended it?
