  • [Question] Where was the Hat Box Ghost???

I must make a confusion, and feel extremely embarrassed to say this. I have no idea where the Hat Box Ghost was on the Haunted Mansion ride. I did not go to Disneyland until Christmas of 2005 so I have no idea where this guy was. I always feel so left out of the conversations regarding everyone being excited about his possible return and granted the pictures I've seen of him do scare the beegeezus out of me but I would like to know where he was and what his importance in the ride was? Especially now that Del Toro is making another Haunted Mansion movie.

Hatbox was physically present in the Haunted Mansion for employee testing, and intermittently the first few weeks of the Mansion being open in 1969 as they tried to make the effect work.

He was located across from where Constance is today. Before her installation, the Bride figure was in Hatbox's old location, roughly where the snake eating the Christmas list is during Haunted Mansion Holiday. As of this moment, that spot is occupied by a cobwebbed hat-rack featuring the hats of Constance's husbands and other misc. junk.

So was he in some way associated with Constance?

Or where they just shacking up in the attic?

Well, Constance is a relatively new addition. For most of the Mansion's operation, the bride was a silent, shadowy figure with a glowing red heart whose beating filled the attic, and glowing eyes. She got changed around some over the years, alternating between spooky and rather eerily sad, until was permanently removed for Constance, an upgrade of the character.

It was implied, in early materials like a story-and-song record, that the Hatbox Ghost was the "groom" to the original scary bride, but such was never said outright in the attraction. If he is to return, the vanishing head gag would certainly fit Constance's M.O. of beheading her husbands.

Also, Doombuggies.com has an imange of Hatbox when he was in the attration.

Wikipedia did have an image of him, but that imange is gone.

Here, Doombuggies explains the bride and Hatbox, it also includs that imange i mentioned eariler.

Constance never existed until 2005. Prior to 2005 the bride was always mysterious and the guest was allowed to create their own story line. Disney has now changed this and forces a really bad (my opinion) storyline down your throat. There are so many other better directions they could have gone, or just left it alone. The attic use to be scary and mysterious. Now its just a joke. Instead of house of horror, its bring replaced with a word that sounds like it (house of w _ _ _ _). I would like to see a very mysterious, creppy bride return and Constance kicked out. The hat box ghost needs to be reunited with the original bride.

To that end I'd like the Internet community to join me in reminding the Disney company that "it all started with Walt." As you can see below we've created some T-shirts, plus a few simple graphics that you can copy and paste into your websites to let folks know how you feel.
