Disney will go Polynesian with new Ahmet Zappa film | 24 Frames | Los Angeles Times

    >>EXCLUSIVE: "Pirates of the Caribbean" is one of the most successful franchises in the history of Disney. But when it comes to classic action-adventure, the company that Walt built isn't stopping with Jack Sparrow.

The studio is developing an adventure film from a script by Ahmet Zappa -- yes, son of Frank -- that's set against a Polynesian backdrop.

Sources close to the project said Zappa and writing partner Michael Wilson were inspired by Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room in writing the script. A Disney spokesperson, however, said the project is not an adaptation of the attraction and is merely an action-adventure that mixes in Polynesian mythology...<<

Well the article did specifically say they weren't making a tiki room movie. It was just it's inspiration for a hawaiian themed film.

^of course even the Pirates Movies are just "based" off the ride no real characters from the ride are in the movie.

There's a lot of myth to draw from. Could be very cool. Plus it's cool to see the parks inspiring movies and not just the other way around. Pirates worked out to be amazing.

There were plenty of characters from POTC that were in the movie. They just weren't main characters.

Re: The Enchanted Tiki Room Movie?

I can hardly make it through the attraction (when I'm dragged in by friends)... I don't think I could make it through a whole movie.
                Some friendly grammar tips:
--"Your" is a possessive pronoun. Example: "your ticket" or "your car".
--"You're" is a contraction for "you are". Example: “You’re going to Disneyland."
--"It's" is a contraction of "it is" or "it has". Example: "It's going to be busy at the park today."
--"Its" is a possessive pronoun. Example: "Haunted Mansion has decorations on its facade.
--"There" is used as a reference to a place (Example: "We should go there") or as a pronoun (Example: "There is no hope").
--Their is a plural possessive pronoun. Example: "They packed their bags for the trip."
--They're is a contraction of "they" and "are". Example: "They're going to Disneyland."

Just sarcasm, my friend However, I should tell you that Disney was working on a Jungle Cruise film for a while. Though it's been put on the backburner for now.

I think the title of the thread is a wee bit misleading. Sounds like this film isn't going to have anything to do with the Tiki Room, other than the obvious Polynesian feel.

It must be noted that they aren't basing the movie on some new ride, but one of the old Walt Disney rides. Further proof Disney can't do very good rides anymore. I mean, if you're going to ignore almost all theme and make a thrill ride (space mountain) at least make it an exciting thrill ride.

Wait... Is the news part the fact that Ahmet Zappa's career is still a smoldering ember?

Seriously though, I want that dude as far away from the Tiki Room as possible. When the most relevant thing you've been up to is writing a treatment for a Fraggle Rock movie.... I would hardly call this a 'destined to make history' partnership.

Re: The Enchanted Tiki Room Movie?

Yep. Disney was developing a Jungle Cruise movie a few years ago. Tim Babb was trying to get a part on it through his Kingdom Comedy YouTube series. Here's the episode that he made about it:

YouTube - Tim Babb's Kingdom Comedy: Jungle Cruise-The Movie

But I had the lucky opportunity to do an internship with a production company at Disney and read a script for the Jungle Cruise that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote. It was awesome!

I don't particularly like the idea of making individual movies for each ride. Not all of them have a big enough story for that. I like the idea of making one film about one park a whole lot better. Like the Magic Kingdom film that Ron Moore is supposedly developing for Disney now. I read that it might be a Night of the Museum meets the Avengers experience with Mickey and the gang as main characters.

With all due respect, I don't see that as "proof Disney can't do very good rides anymore." It's that a.) older attractions have a deeper recognition factor, and b.) almost all the newer attractions have already been extrapolated from movies, making it difficult to do the opposite and extract a movie from them. Even Splash Mountain has Song of the South imagery--strange, when you think of it.

What year are you living in, 2004? We haven't seen another attraction adapted for film in six years. And, with this, only five rides have ever been considered for films.
