Los Angeles Streetcars: A Push To Bring Back The Rich History Of Streetcars Begins In Downtown LA

Re: Los Angeles is trying to steal Disney's trolley thunder!

No, It won't take the red trolleys thunder as the ones in LA would be modern trolleys like the ones built in Athens for the 2004 Olympics. So the red trolleys will have better style then.

      As rightfully they should.

You can't take what already belonged to you. And they have been having meetings about these trolleys for years, probably even before the concept of BVS began.

Really, the Red Cars should have never left.

They did not leave, they were pushed out. Firestone, GM and Standard Oil bought up and shut down trolly systems all over the country inlcuding in LA, to sell buses and the supplies needed for them. It was a shame and there were anti trust cases about it, but they had already won. Trolleys couldn't compete.

It's nice that DCA and DL are getting or have a trolley because it's really a throw back to what once was. Very nostalgic. For the same reason cities bring them back, to add atmosphere, not because they are simply better than buses.

Surely, most cities have been planning to build there trolley system again since the 70's, oil prices. Several have have found suscess using vintage trolleys, modern trolleys, or light rail.

To everyone who is caught up in how this could possibly steal Disney's "trolley thunder," I think the OP intended the thread title to be humorous.

This is exciting news for LA! The streetcars in New Orleans add a lot of character to the city. I hope they go through with this, even if the cars will be more contemporary.

It could be good, help give locals have a greater appreciation for LA history and make them more interested in visiting DCA.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with childrens toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You knowthe Mickey in us.

Thanks for not taking the news too seriously.

The Trolley we have here in San Diego adds a lot of character as well. Unfortunately, the planned extension up to the La Jolla/UCSD/UTC area hasn't happened yet.

Many systems, including Pacific Electric, were already killing off routes and switching to buses. The companies involved were seeking to capitalize on an existing trend.

I don't think that an actual trolley line in LA would make people more interested in visiting DCA. I don't think it'd have an effect either way.

Ha, as a Trolley rider every day, I should mention some of the worst people in S.D, County can be found on the things as well.

SF has a great number of restored trolleys. Even a topless one. (The trolley, not the passengers.) Fun to ride and watch. I highly recommend it.

Here is a web site showing where the F line trolleys are right now!
