  • [Question] Glow With The Show Ears... where else do they work?

Hi All, I checked for other threads but didn't find any specifics about where the Glow w/ the Show Ears work.

I was able to get a pair of Glow With The Show Ears from one of the AP events, but haven't looked at them since until last night. It got me thinking that I'd like to find out where the ears interact with your location. I'm sure some people like to have lots of surprises, but I don't mind "spoilers" as hearing about something ahead of time doesn't affect me.

So far the ears work here:

    WoC
    Flo's V8 Cafe
    Luigi's Flying Tires
    Mad T Party

Anyone know of any other places?

Cozy Cone is the only one you are missing that I know of.

Oh and I read somewhere that the ears keep track of how many WoC shows they've been part of... does anyone know if that helps us guests, or is that just for DLR to keep track of the usage of the ears?

According to the Disney Parks Blog video on how the ears work, it's comparable to a television remote with infrared signals transmitted to certain numbered "zones" that activate the ears. With that in mind, I don't think the ears can communicate individually with a computer and send/receive information and keep statistics. I don't know though.

It certainly sounds like they can be hacked pretty easily. It'd be hilarious if someone could get a pair to light up every time their cell phone rings.

Word on the street is that the system is being expanded to other places. pretty sure we will hear about it soon though. hopefully they will do an AP release party... only time will tell.

Since I haven't seen them in person...

Don't they work anywhere? Like if you're walking around and a group of them are near each other weren't they supposed to start flashing in sync with the surrounding hats?

Yeah, they always are doing something, but in the place mentioned before they are triggered to do specific things. When you walk into the area, everyone's hats start doing specific colors/patterns related to the area.

According to the blog, each hat has its own individual Serial Number that is recorded.

From Chuck Davis, Disney Creative Entertainment Technical Director:

“The base control infrastructure is infrared, just like your TV remote,” explained Davis. “The viewing area is divided into zones, about 40 zones, and each of those zones is able to be sent individual commands to the hats within that zone. The hats themselves have a unique serial number and so with the combination of the unique serial number and the zones, we can create geographic spacial effects where we wipe colors from right to left or from the front of the audience to the back, or the middle to out. We can even control one ear differently than the other ear.”

That could potentially be VERY ANNOYING. If you're in an attraction (Pirates, Great Moments with Lincoln, etc.), next to other ears, having them constantly flashing would be a total distraction.

When placed near another set of hats, they sync up and the lights will glow the same color on both pairs. When you walk apart they usually stop.

They don't start up unless you already have them turned on. A person with the hats should turn them off when entering a ride (they will still be glowing colors) or the CM should request that they turn them off. Same with any of the light up toys.

I heard they have something at Indy where they won't work in the ride so that you can't turn them on.
