  • [Question] Wooden plaque for first 500 in disneyland... True?

I got this mickey mouse plaque from my great aunt about 15 years ago. She told me she got it on the day that disneyland opened and being one of the first 500 into the park. Anyone know anything about this?

Never heard or seen this before. I'd love to find out more about this!

Do you know if it was opening day July 17th or when it opened the next day for the general public?
I may be confused, was the 17th invite only : Press and Celebrities?
Little and broken, but still good.

It looks like something for valentines day. You might be sitting on a ill piece of Disneyland history.

I read somewhere that when Disneyland first opened Walt didn't want too many Mickey Mouse references because if the park failed he didn't want people to associate Mickey Mouse with the failure. That's why he opted not to call it Mickey Mouse Park, which had been previously considered. I'm not saying your grandma is lying but it would surprise me if that had been given out as a souvenir, especially during the early days of the park.

Take it to Vegas and have Rick, the Old Man, Hoss, or Chumlee call in an expert.

(OK, I clearly watch that show too much.)

Another thing to consider is the design of that Mickey. The 30s (pre-Freddie Moore) Mickey wasn't the dominant version seen in the mid-50s -- it was mostly (though not always) the Mickey from the late 40s through early-50s shorts, a variant of which was used on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show titles.

I'd also question the heart design, as something that doesn't quite seem like a Disneyland Opening Day giveaway.

This isn't proof of anything one way or the other, just saying that it's something for the OP to inquire about further.

It sounds like Vegas might be my best bet. Might have to take it in there the next time I go. Thank you for the help everyone!

Was also going to say the mickey seems like it's not a right fit for the time in question. It probably was a first 500 give away... just maybe not on opening day...

My problem with this is the coloring. The colors are too bright to be from the 50's it looks like you have a very confused Aunt. I think you need to sit down with her and ask her.

The aunt passed about 10 years ago. The colors probably look bright from the cell phone taking the picture. Might have added some saturation.

The colors certainly do not look to bright for the 1950s, in fact the 1950s was one of the most colorful era's in american history, you might have that initial thought because 99% of the things we see in the 1950s are in black and white.

I don't think this is from Disneyland's opening. To me, it just looks "too new" to be from the mid-'50s. I have also never heard of the first 500 guests recieving a gift either. Your aunt may have been the first 500 to recieve this for some event, but I am very suspicious that this is from July of 1955 because it just not seem to fit Disney's design style for Mickey from that era.

As for condition, it could've been stashed away in a shoebox for all these years. I think the Mickey looks a little newer than it should. I wish I remembered the Archives' email. This would be a perfect thing to ask them.
