  • [Question] Alright, rank your top 10 theme/amusement parks

Obviously on a Disney board we can assume that there will be a huge bias towards those parks, but at the same time we've been to them and we know better. We know the difference between Disney and a Six Flags park. But do a top 10 ranking anyway:

#1 Disneyland - About as perfect as a theme park can possibly be. Walt knew what he was doing and this is a part that has been emulated but never duplicated. The happiest place on earth, you bet.

#2 Magic Kingdom (WDW) - I was a lifelong WDW veteran and I had never been to Disneyland up until last year. I couldn't imagine a park eclipsing the Magic Kingdom but Disneyland did. That being said, this is still a strong #2 in my book.

#3 Islands of Adventure (Universal Orlando) - You only live once, and you should never miss this park. Lots of rides like the Hulk, Potter, Spiderman, Jurassic River Adventure, etc. Even Dr. Seuss' land is nice.

#4 DCA - Yeah that's right, I'm putting it here. I know it was the butt end of the joke for a long time but my first time going was 2012. Carsland is amazing and very immersive. Radiator Springs Racers is a wonderful ride. Then everything else falls into place. Lots of great attractions: Toy Story Mania, TOT, Grizzly River Run, Soarin, California Screamin'. Not to mention the Aladdin show was amazing. To top the night off we see World of Color. What a way to end it.

#5 Epcot - Sort of a log jam for me with #4-8 so it isn't like one is much better than the other. With Epcot as I got older I appreciated it more. There is nowhere else in the world quite like it.

#6 Disney Hollywood Studios - There could be some improvements to it but it still remains a park blessed with some Disney mystique. It has the better version of Tower of Terror.

#7 Universal Studios Orlando - Hard to imagine a park that has actually slipped behind its sister park but that's the case with it. It bothers me a bit that they have ripped out much of the original rides (Kongfrontation, Jaws, Back to the Future) but it is still a great park. Still find E.T. one of the most immersive rides out there.

#8 Animal Kingdom - Don't think it is just a simple zoo and nothing more. Couldn't be farther from the truth. It is a zoo with a Disney touch to it. A few good rides too (Everest, Dinosaur) even if they could add some more. But the Tree of Life is a sight to behold. You could spend an hour literally just looking at the carvings on the tree.

#9 Cedar Point - Definitely my favourite non Disney/Universal park. It is a candy store for coaster enthusiasts. Still considered the mecca of all rollercoaster parks. It'll wear you out. The only knock is that the theming isn't Disney of course and the lines can be atrocious.

#10 King's Island - Very much Cedar Point's little brother. Has some nice coasters and intense ones. The best wooden one I've ever been on was the Beast, bar none.

HM - Universal Hollywood (the tour was amazing but the attractions are lacking and the escalators took a while, still worth a visit)
Sea World Orlando (Overall great park)
Busch Gardens Tampa (Supposedly the one in Williamsburg, Virgina is nicer)

Never been to Knott's or Magic Mountain yet.

    Disneyland
    Disneyland Paris
    Walt Disney World
    Epcot Center
    Sea World/San Diego
    DCA

and to get at least 7 on the list:

Knott's Berry Farm (the 60s/70s version)

After that, they're all a blur.

Re: Alright, rank your top 10 theme/amusement parks

1)Magic Kingdom 2)Islands of Adventure 3)Universal Studios Florida 4)Disney's Hollywood Studios 5)Animal Kingdom 6)SeaWorld Orlando 7)Busch Gardens Tampa 8) Cedar Point 9) Kennywood Park 10) Kings Island. I've been to Six Flags Magic Mountain but that was in 2004 and I've never been to Disneyland, KBF, or DCA. I've been to four Cedar Fair parks, Cedar Point, Kings Island, Carowinds, and Kings Dominion, so I can only immagine what KBF must be like.
        Current coaster count: 179
100th coaster: Phantom's Revenge at Kennywood
        150th coaster: Intimidator at Carowinds
last new park addition: Six Flags Great America

Re: Alright, rank your top 10 theme/amusement parks

Haven't been to a whole lot of parks, so here goes:

            1) Epcot
            2) Magic Kingdom
            3) Silver Dollar City
            4) Disneyland (its position on the list is iffy, 'cause it's been 22 years since I've been there)
            5) Busch Gardens (Tampa)
            6) Disney's Hollywood Studios
            7) Animal Kingdom

I've also been to Six Flags St Louis, Worlds of Fun, and Knott's, but none of those remotely compare to the ones on my list, so they're not even really getting an "honorary" mention; just a mention to show what all parks I've been to.

^ I believe it says to rank your top ten amusement/theme parks. To my knowledge, San Fransisco and London don't fit that description.

SF has BART, the boat rides to Marin & to Alkatraz, the cable cars, the Exploratorium (so much better than Innoventions, even without Asimo) and many costumed characters.

London has the tube, the London Eye ride, Madam T's Wax Museum, a queen, palaces, many theaters, and I always feel like I'm at a wonderful theme park when I'm there.

                        But I'll cross them out.

I'm glad you listed them - found it very interesting. Having lived in the heart of Manhattan, Paris & Boston and intensively explored a number of the planet's great cities, I sometimes found/find myself wandering such places with a joyful sensation that's akin to the feeling I got as a kid in great theme parks.

I don't think it is because cities such as London have built theme-park-like features (which they have), but because both great cities and theme parks emit overwhelming visual, aural and olfactory stimuli to the pedestrian. Something similar happened to me at the Grand Canyon Lodge, Mont St. Michel and other wonders, natural or manmade. Theme parks are often derided as fake or plastic when compared to 'real' wonders, but I think if really high-quality parks can evoke the same type of visceral reaction then there is a legitimacy and worth that ought not to be discounted.
