  • [Question] Cast Members that have Accidents

    Hello,
I see many fails of Cast Members on YouTube (For example the ones in costume) where they may fall and their head will come off or something like that.

Do they really get terminated from their job? Surely not.

    Here's an example:

    I can't confirm and seriously doubt they do, but I do love the comment someone posted on that YouTube video;

    - The queen wasn't kidding when she said "Off With His Head!"

That was sad to see. I wonder how many do roll their ankles while slipping or stepping awkwardly on the track rails that run down the street. I can't imagine the peripheral vision being that good in the costumes.

What an embarrassing video. Can you imagine if that was you? It didn't look like many people were even on the sidelines viewing this parade, but still it was captured on video so it certainly garnered more attention that way. To be fired for something you couldn't control must be an awful feeling.

It's clear from the video that the CM instantly grabs for the costume's head and puts it back on. In no way is such an accident a fireable offense, or indeed an offense of any sort.

Agreed. Maybe if the tripping was a result of being drunk, stoned, or just plain goofing off it would be grounds for termination. None of that was evidenced in the video. It appears it is just a case of dumb luck. I'm sure the worker kept his job (although he probably caught plenty of crap from co-workers backstage).

Luckily, that's the smallest parade crowd I've ever seen.

Looks like the poor CM was actually hurt. That's so sad.

It's funny, my husband often mentions how much he loves the magic of Disneyland, and how it would all be lost if he saw a character without their head on. He said he would hate to KNOW he's hugging a person in costume, rather than to go with the fantasy of meeting a character. I can't say I disagree! There's just something about the characters, especially, that I don't want to see any part of the "behind the scenes" aspects. The rides, yes, I'd love to walk the tracks and see the lights on, but the characters I hold to a completely different standard.

Eh. I've been backstage (Pooh Corner/Splash Mountain exit) and I've seen the performers getting ready. It has yet to deter me from enjoying the characters and CM's. Perhaps, being involved in the theatre helps, since you see the behind-the-scenes there and can still appreciate the magic presented on stage as well.

A character head should not fall off that easily. Either the performer hadn't put the head on correctly or the head was damaged beforehand and that's why it fell off. Either way someone would have been to blame and should/would have got into trouble for that happening.

To be honest, that accident could easily be an OSHA complaint. Not only can they not fire him, but they owe workers comp if he took time off and they probably need to make a policy change.

There is no reason to fire someone for an accident like that.... It's an accident, not something done intentionally.

You have to do something really stupid or do a really crummy job at your job in order to get fired. Firing someone because a "little" accident like this is nonsense. They don't terminate THAT easily.

Is that at Disneyland Paris? The street doesn't look like our Disneyland...

I agree with the others. It looks as though it's been raining and it also looks as though the CM slips on the trolley track while he's doing his job. Firing or disciplining the CM for that just couldn't happen. I hope the CM was OK.

I would also hope that maybe it would convince Disney not to have characters hopping like that when it's been raining and the streets are slick.

The heads aren't herald that tightly onto their heads. Contrary to what you think, it is very easy to get them off.

And it's mainly triggers arm that pops the head off. It just so happens to catch the head and push it in the way that makes them come off easiest. Just falling over like that doesn't make then come off.

Before anyone starts the OSHA machine lets look at the video stats the video was posted November 2009 and if you look at the street it has bricks. So its not a US park (Hong Kong?) so OSHA has no involvement and by this time any agencies that would be involved would be outside of its reporting time. Also the ground was wet and the shoe of the CM slipped on the track. These accidents do happen and will continue to happen. I would only seeing a firing happen at Tokyo because of Japanizes culture.

Just to confirm this is at Paris

I still think form watching the video that the head is not on properly, Tiggers arm dosen't really push it hard enough for it to come off, although what you say isn't completely impossible, I really don't think it gets pushed enough. I know what the heads are like
