  • News Explosion at Toontown (05/28/13)

There are a lot of reports of some sort of explosion at Toontown at around 6 PM with reports of evacuations and firefighters going in. I hope everyone is okay. Does anyone have more updates on this developing story?

Update: The cause according to Anaheim Police Dept was dry ice in a water bottle inside a trash can with no injuries reported. Who would do such a thing?

UPDATE 5/29: A CM has been arrested and charged with placing the Dry Ice in a Trash Can.

"A 22-year-old Disneyland outdoor vending cast member has been arrested in connection with a dry ice explosion in Mickey's Toontown area.
Anaheim police say Christian Barnes of Long Beach was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of possessing a destructive device.
Barnes is being held on $1 million bail. Police say he is cooperating with investigators and has indicated that this was an isolated incident with "unanticipated impacts."

So much for the bag checks. I think the better question is how did dry ice get into the park?

If not checking properly in terms of bags, I am sure they will tighten down - another possibility, however, is the fact Disneyland ODV department uses dry ice themselves for ice cream carts and the like as far as I know (some CM's I know stated that.) So it could be that where it came from and not snuck in at all, by very stupid accident or on purpose, which doubtless would be investigated.

Honestly, I think Disney should step up their bag checks as 90% the time they only check the main compartment. I I bring a bag with 2 main compartments, they usually only check one and sort of feel around for large and sharp objects. Dry ice would be easy to sneak if they wrapped it in a jacket or something.

I also highly doubt this was an accident. Nobody would put dry ice in a water bottle accidentally.

I have thought the bag checks at Disney were a joke for years. Every once in a while I will come across a checker who thoroughly looks through a bag, but a majority of the time they shine a flashlight at the opening and let you walk through.

Would bag checks even stop something like this? Dry ice bombs only require a water bottle with water and dry ice. That's it. Bringing ice and a water bottle into the park is considered acceptable. Dry ice bombs are usually used in pranks and stuff and are "minor".

I think security was not in the wrong for this. Someone brought in a water bottle and ice, and to most people, that seems legit.

Dry and ice are easily discernible. Dry ice is usually carried in special containers and look very different than regular ice. Then again, they could have taken the dry ice from an ODV cart

Do you think bag checks would really have stopped this? C'mon.

But because of this, get ready for longer lines now at the bag check area...

Perhaps the individual got the dry ice from one of the Disney carts, ive seen them use dry ice on more than one occasion.

Small Explosion or not, It still Seems weird no one noticed the drop into the trash at all too.
then its small enough to just drop in a trash in a quick second

Sad that these can happen at anytime

How did the weasels get past the security checkpoint?

Why would somebody throwing away a water bottle be unusual?

Im pretty sure the dry ice came from an odv cart. Ive seen the CMs refill the ice enough times to know that quite a bit can be spilled onto the floor and it stays solid long enough for some opportunistic person to come pick it up. Lucky for them (and Disney) that it didnt explode in their hands or pocket.

As this thread has confirmed not many people know how security works.

I will not go into detail on how security works to stop bombings, but at Disneyland it is working.
