  • News 2012 Theme Park Attendance Numbers have Been Released

Theme Park attendance numbers have been released for 2012:

DL dropped in attendance by only 1.1%.
DCA jumped from 6 million to 7.75 million. Far lower than what any rumors were out there. It grew a very healthy 22% but was still by far the lowest attended stateside Disney park and even with a full year of attendance numbers extrapolated out since the expansion of last summer, it wouldn't pass any of the WDW properties, much less passing EPCOT which had been rumored. I'm pretty surprised. I thought it would be at least 8-9 million.

DCA 2.0 opened in the last half of last year. It did pretty good considering oh six months were counted.

I'm sure next year's will be higher.

Maybe they are Disney Corporate Year numbers? Oct-Sep?

A back of the envelope calculation by me shows that extrapolating out the current attendance jump by a full year would equal 9.42 million people for DCA in 2013, which is 5% lower than DHS 2012 attendance, WDW's least attended park.

Just thought I'd verify your observation with some numbers.

So that why DCA phase 2 should commenced at once!

With those numbers if I were Disney I would be worried. Knotts and USH are looming on the horizon and if Disney doesn't do anything major those parks are going to get even more popular - especially with HP coming up, and Knotts continually making improvements. And with Disney's less-than-stellar attendance the future might not be so rosy as is usually assumed on these boards.

Parks are still pretty crowded... Maybe some people aren't being counted.

I'm really happy to see other parks in California doing well, including USH and Knott's.

All I can say is that completition is a good thing. You can drive down "burger row" in any town and find McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy's all right next to one another and they all stay in business. Some days you feel like flame broiled, others you feel like a chicken wrap. Same with amusement/theme parks. As so many folks complain, DLR parks are always crowded with people, despite fierce competition from USH and Knott's. Obviously there is not a problem there...

Re: 2012 Theme Park Attendance Numbers have Been Released

Carsland will obviously not drive attendance for all of 2013 the way it did for the first few months of its opening, but if DCA can settle in somewhere around 9 million per year, a little below or above, then I think that is a big success.
What blows me away is that if you look at attendance patterns over the last few years, USH has actually had a bigger percentage increase than DCA. Im stunned by that.
Look out for USH when Potter debuts. This IS going to have a MASSIVE impact on the theme park industry and tourist patterns for SoCal theme parks. On the other hand, I don't see Knotts as a threat in any way shape or form. Hopefully it can get back to being a nice , clean and well themed LOCALS park.

Universal Studios Hollywood grew by 15%! And a single ride is the cause of that! I can't wait to see the numbers once Wizarding World opens up!
Also I think this is the first time that all 3 state side Universal Theme Parks are in the North American top 10.

When WWoHP opens, everything we know about tourism in SoCal is going to change. Not to mention the "rumored" Monstropolis expansion would open adjacent to Potter that same year.
