  • [Fun] Hatbox Ghost Animatronic featured at D23!

Wasn't really sure what to label this thread but I just saw this on Instagram from the Dateline Disneyland account. Pretty neat! I'm sure it's going to add fuel to the fire for any HBG rumors this year. Enjoy!

That's is a fully functional operating AA figure. It's not a rumor anymore. I'd expect Hatty to be back in HM soon after to D23 Expo or perhaps once HMH get's taken down in January.

Wow, that's incredible, rising from the ashes of rumor and speculation and into reality. Now it all boils down to whether or not he will be reimplemented back into the ride. Wasn't the hatbox ghost removed because the effect wasn't working properly? I'm sure with today's technology we could get around the shortfalls of the past.

These are exciting times. The Hatbox Ghost belongs in the attraction; no two ways about it. Fingers crossed.

Hoping this will be implanted into Mansion sooner, rather than later.

That is pretty cool! However, I might be out of the loop on this... but why are so many fans obsessed with this "Hatbox Ghost"? I'm not trying to stir commotion, I'm just a little lost on why this character is such a big deal. I know he was in the attraction for a short time when the it first opened. Maybe someone could explain?

Again, not trying to start arguments...

I'd like to see them hold off his return until the 60th Anniversary. I think it would be a great 60th Anniversary gift to the fans.

I think his popularity is explained to the fact that he had always been one of the mansion's most prominent characters due to both the mystery of his disappearance and Disney's continual use of his character on various promotions and merchandise for the attraction. Mystery of the Hatbox Ghost from DisneyHistory on YouTube explains how even before the attraction debuted the Hatbox Ghost was becoming a recognizable character among guests:

"In the months leading up to the mansion's grand opening, Disneyland released promotional photos of its effects designer, Yale Gracey, posing with mock-ups of various ghosts. The most widely circulated of these photos was of an early prototype of the Hatbox Ghost."

And though he was removed shortly after opening, his character never quite faded away from the popular consciousness of guests, due widely to the fact that his image, to this day, continues to be prominently featured by Disney, as mentioned on the Hatbox Ghost's Wikipedia page:

"Because the Hatbox Ghost featured prominently in artwork and narration for popular Haunted Mansion record albums sold for many years at Disney parks, and because Disney continues to market the ghost's image, he has never been forgotten and has become somewhat of a legend, complete with cult following."

Additionally, I think a portion of his popularity is due to the rumors of why he was removed from the attraction. The reason is plain and simple--his effect didn't work--but that's not the only version of the story that circulated around, as briefly mentioned in The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies by Jason Surrell:

"In departure from some of Ken Anderson's original stories, Imagineers did not originally plan ot leave the bride stranded at the alter. For a short period of time she did have a groom-the infamous Hatbox Ghost, whose very existence fans have theorized and argued about for years. This sinister groom character did, indeed, exist, but unfortunately for the bride, the honeymoon was over before it could even begin.

'He was originally going to be where the bride is now,' Imagineer Tony Baxter explains. "The bride was going to be in the exact opposite corner. In fact, for years, the Doom Buggy turned you directly that way so you could see her, but there was nothing to see because we had moved her to the other end of the attic. Now, that spot is occupied by the playing harpsichord. The Hatbox Ghost just disappeared--the molds, the figure itself, everything, so all we have all the photos are renderings.'

But why? Was he just too frightening? Was it his chilling visage that caused a reporter to have a heart attack, to tie him into another unfounded urban legend? The true isn't nearly as ghoulish. The Hatbox Ghost effect simply didn't work.

As originally planned, the Hatbox Ghost stood near the Attic's exit, leaning on a cane in his right hand and holding a hatbox aloft in the left. 'With every beat of his bride's heart, his head disappeared from his body... and reappeared in the hatbox,' as it was described in The Story and Song from The Haunted Mansion. The illusion was created by a carefully timed lighting effect. The standing ghost's head was illuminated by black light, and the head in the hatbox was lit with a small, pin spotlight. When the black light faded down and the pin spot came up, it did, indeed, look as though his head had vanished and reappeared inside the hatbox. The effect was then reversed on the next beat of the bride's heart.

Due to the guests' proximity to the figure and the Attic's ambient light, it could never be dark enough for the effect it be truly convincing. The speed at which the Doom Buggies moved by the figure also ensured there could never be enough time to run the entire gag. Although the Hatbox Ghost appeared during Cast Member previews and possibly even a soft opening to the generic public, the figure was removed before the attraction's official debut, never to be seen again."

Though this explanation of the Hatbox Ghost's disappearance from the attraction debunks the more "ghoulish" and gruesome rumors, they do still exist and continue to excite the curiosity and imagination of fans. Rumors like this create intrigue and legend that make a character memorable.

Add this to the fact that, mystery and rumors aside, his effect is a really neat idea, his story is unique and beautifully fits the tone of the mansion, and he has a really cool character design, and I think you have an explanation for his popularity. Ultimately, he's a pretty unique character with a pretty unique history that has managed to capture the imagination of fans like few other characters have.

I think it's too much of a departure from the original, with regard to its appearance.

If he's going to be animatronic, I hope his head can still disappear and re-appear.

I think they need to make him look more 'old man with cane' like he did in his original animatronic... but anyhow, this is pretty cool they might finally be putting him back in the ride.
