  • [Chat] Will Aladdin close at DCA?

With Aladdin set to open in March 2014, will we see Aladdin close at DCA eventually? What do you think should replace Aladdin?

I'd kinda like them to try to move away from the character based shows. Aladdin isn't that much more than they could pull off at the Wonderbra theatre - if it's even more than they could do there.

They built a near professional grade theatre with an eye to providing an experience at least approaching the Broadway/Hollywood theatre experience. That eye's wandered a LOT over the years, but I keep hoping at the very least they'll add better musical acts, more "Power of Blast" style shows and such and make it an actual theatre instead of another glorified retelling of a Disney movie.

I don't think Aladdin is going anywhere for a while. For two reasons. One it still brings in a lot of people on a given day. and two the genie always changes his jokes and they never get old.

Anything less will be a step down from Aladdin

I believe Aladdin still packs them in, so there's no reason to change it. There are too many other things to spend money on instead -- continue to upgrade Paradise Pier, improve the rest of Hollywoodland, new Tomorrowland, new Fantasyland, etc. Aladdin is about # 117 on a list of things that need to be fixed or upgraded at Disneyland right now.

It packs them in because its the only real stage show at DCA. It's not about fixing nor upgrading, its about changing a show that has been there for years and where another production of the same show will be opening soon.

Also I highly doubt a show budget is going to take away from any projects that you've mentioned.

It was already set to be replaced a year or two ago by a Toy Story musical. People complained, the change was cancelled, so I don't see them changing it any time soon (especially with the Blu Ray hopefully being released next year.)

Are you sure? Last time I was there a few weeks ago he used the same Lady Gaga and Kardashian jokes I heard at least a year ago. Not that I don't love the show, but the jokes aren't THAT fresh.

They spent a fortune on that show.

Missing any BIG new idea, any replacement will reduce labor costs by axing a lot of actors, plus the set design won't be as elaborate.

I doubt it. Beauty and the Beast played at DHS contemporaneously with the Broadway version.

I wish Toy Story had already replaced Aladdin as initially planned. I for one cannot stand the Genie and the jokes get beyond awful. The Facebook jokes were once Myspace jokes and are a plead for modern day relevancy. The jokes themselves aren't terribly clever but maybe that's an appeal to small town folk.

The show opens very strong and could otherwise be a quality performance.

They just replaced a lot of the lighting effects inside so we are about 3 years + away from shutting it down.
