  • [Question] Has Disneyland ever MOVED a ride?

I hope this doesn't sound like an insipid question, but I was perusing another thread on here (relating to the creation of Monsteropolis as a land in DCA) and a thought occurred to me regarding the theme of Hollywood Land. Has - and if not, would - Disney ever consider moving an attraction to another land?

The thought that something like Roger Rabbitt's Cartoon Spin could fit into Hollywood Land to improve on that areas themed Hollywood based attractions. I know there's a whole other question of what to do with 'Toon Town but if you could consolidate that attraction there and move some of those items into HL, then you cold use the current Toon Town for other attractions (expanding other lands nearby or creating some new land there).

Anyway just a question and a thought. Rip away!

I think they moved Dumbo and the carousel during the Fantasyland remodel in 1983

They moved Dumbo during the 1983 Fantasyland redesign, and the Astro Orbiter in the 1998 Tomorrowland redesign. Nothing to the extent of a dark ride I don't think!

I'd love to see Roger Rabbit find a home in Hollywood Land, but I don't think I'd bring over Car Toon Spin. I'd like to see him within the context of Maroon Studios or the Ink & Paint Club. As for Toon Town, I'd go with a complete redesign sans Roger Rabbit, using a "classic Mickey short" style of architecture.

Did Astro Orbiter look like that when it was on top of the People Mover Building? I thought I recalled more plain 60's versions of the rockets.

They moved the Matterhorn from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland I believe...

Dumbo, the carousel and the Mad Tea Party were all moved during the 1983 remodel.

The railroad track along the north of the park was moved north when It's A Small World was moved to the park from the World's Fair in New York. The train used to run along the back of Storybook Land.

I don't think the Astro Orbiter counts, as it doesn't use any of the parts from the Rocket Jets (which may or may not have used the mechanism from the Astro Jets). In fact, part of the mechanism from the Rocket Jets is still on top of the old Peoplemover loading platform.

They did not move Astro Orbiter, they installed a new ride and just took the rockets off of the Rocket Jets. They moved the show pieces of IASW and the dinosaurs from Magic Skyway from Glendale to New York and then to DL's DLRR. They also moved the show from Carousel of Progress from Anaheim to Orlando. They've moved shows and parades around often as well because it's much more practical obviously.
The Mickey audience is not made up of people; it has no racial, national, political, religious or social differences or affiliations; the Mickey audience is made up of parts of people, of that deathless, precious, ageless, absolutely primitive remnant of something in every world-wracked human being which makes us play with children’s toys and laugh without self-consciousness at silly things, and sing in bathtubs, and dream and believe that our babies are uniquely beautiful. You know…the Mickey in us.

The alignment for the DLRR has been changed several times to allow for park expansion.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a branch line that ran to DCA?

I don't think they moved the Matterhorn, instead I think they shifted the lands and their real estate that surround the Matterhorn. But I could be wrong.

Bottom line they've moved simple rides but never anything as complex as Roger Rabbit. So it's doubtful that they would spend the money it would cost to move a ride just because it would fit better thematically. If they really decided to make Toontown part of Fantasyland I think they would just leave it as is. Roger Rabbit fits in both Toontown and Fantasyland.

Not being an engineer I don't really know the complexity of a move such as this, but it seems to me that it would cost considerably less than building a new dark ride, just sayin'.

But I get your point that it is not Disney's style to make such a drastic move just to improve the cohesiveness of an areas theme, which is too bad because I think DCA could use it.

Disney also moved Its a Small World from the 1964 Worlds Fair to Disneyland.

I believe the Carousel of Progress holds the record for longest move
