  • History of the Disneyland Resort

Was the Disneyland Resort officially opened on the same day as DCA? Has anyone got any scripts, photos or videos of the ceremonies of either openings? Was anyone present? What were your feelings and thoughts at the resort expansion? Did anyone camp in Disneyland to be the first in DCA?

yes yes yes. There are plenty of pictures of opening festivities. All the characters came out the balconies of the GCH rooms, at the dedication ceremonies. Laughing Place has pictures of all that.

January 2001 feels like a lifetime ago. Anything pre-911 feels like a lifetime ago. Just in terms of technology---there were no Ipods, blackberries, cranberries etc... There was no war going on etc.

      Ahem......anyway....moving right along....

For coverage of all GCH and DCA Grand Opening pictures and ceremonies, go here and scroll down down down--- to where it says "Grand Opening Reports": http://www.laughingplace.com/Info-ID-DL-DCAOpenings.asp

Re: History of the Disneyland Resort

I did not camp out, but watched it on the news thinking , "who would want to do that?" I still wonder that. I didn't camp out for the 50th either...but anyway....It was the first year i bought an AP and the only reason I bought one was because DCA was going to open. When I went they were having the pre-views still.....so we went into DL, but could not wait to go inot DCA...

I remember, the news had declared DCA a failure before it ever opened. Yikes.

Still, it didn't stop people from camping. It must have been cold, much more so than last May 17th, however, last May there was a slight threat of rain.

Even with bad reviews for DCA....that was such a milestone in the life of the resort. There'd never been such a major expansion, before.

All I remember is seeing the old marquee going bye bye, and then discovering a piece of it later on ebay

When were the years the infamous Paul Pressler and Cynthia Harris reign? I'm still a bit sketchy on that.

Yes..smack dab in the middle if I'm not mistaken.

Question...didn't they begin referring to it as the Resort in the latter 90's?

CYNTHIA HARRISS: ".....And I want to thank all of you for joining us for this week because during this week we are going to celebrate so many new beginnings of our new Disneyland Resort. Together with Disney’s California Adventure and Downtown Disney, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel plays an important role in our overall resort. So I followed the link to read the opening day speeches on Laughing Place. What a jack*** Eisner is re-creating the DL opening day speech. He really did think he was the second coming of Walt didn't he?!

Re: History of the Disneyland Resort

The Eisner speech is really worth watching. First of all, Eisner rambles on this rip-off of the opening day speech and then stands there as nothing happens. He then says "And now..." and people politely applaud because it just hit them that he's finally finished and it's the right thing to do.

Secondly, as he's giving this speech, this poor Mickey standing next to him is easily just as bored as the crowd is. He passes the time grinding his heels, giving thumbs-up to Roy and the crowd, and messing with his bowtie something fierce. When Eisner has finished his bloviating, the mouse actually makes a "raise the roof" gesture.

                        Press conference in a nutshell:

Re: History of the Disneyland Resort

Since the Governor who proclaimed 2/8/01 as "DCA Day" has since been recalled, can we have a recall election for DCA too?

                          Just a thought... )

Since we have a supposedly far more enlightened management team now in place, can we get "Westcot" in office after the voting?
