  • Sleeping Beauty's Castle: Then and Now

With all the talk of bling vs. no bling, I thought it would be fun to compare the castle.

Now, granted, this particular comparison isn't *exactly* fair because the "then" picture was taken when the castle was BADLY in need of painting and was taken from the side (don't let the absence of Walt in the image bias you, LOL)

Personally, there is *some* of the bling I like, some I don't. But as a traditionalist, I will be happy to have our old castle back (but still with fresh paint job, and perhaps just a touch of the bling, but nix the gold drapes across the turrets, sheesh!)

    Castle THEN:

    Castle NOW:

If nothing else, this side-by-side (up and down?) comparison should be interesting to people who've been wondering how big a change it really is.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

I was thinking about this last night as I stood infront of the castle thinking about how it's going to loose all of the shiney gold stuff. I've realized that the gold decorations I used to despise, I have now come to truly appreciate and love. I'm going to miss the castle "bling" and I actually think the crowns should be kept. Unveil a sixth crown on the 60th anniversary. Either way, some bling should stay.

I like some of the gold accents, and hope they stay.

I was really worried when I first hear the plans to *bling* the castle, but was pleasantly surprised. Mainly because what I imagined was far worse than what they actually did.

If they lost the drapes and crowns, and left the gold crenellations, I'd be glad.

I'm kinda liking the no gold look.

When I first saw the paint job, I thought the pink was too bright. I've always liked the brighter turquoise on the roof, though. I don't like the gold draping or the humongous fake jewels. The crowns, although I don't care for them, I would only keep if that would ensure pyro effects for future fireworks shows. The only "extra" I would like to see stay is the scroll work in the middle over the drawbridge and maybe some of the gold painted accents.

I wonder what they'll end up keeping. I doubt they'll repaint it so it's drab again.

It will be like when they take down the Christmas decorations - a little bare at first...

But, I agree - other than the bunting and banners, I like the gold.

love the gold, hate the banners and all the gold draping, .if it was the plain castle with the gold I would love it!

I don't mind the gold accent on the upper (pink, basically) structure, but I'd like to see the crowns, bunting, and any gold on stonework taken down.

How about a comparison of the 1955 blue & white castle to the new bling palace?

Thanks goonie, forgot exactly what the old castle had looked like. Keep the crowns, paint, roof.....the rest can go!

I admit it will take some getting used to after seeing the castle dressed up for so long now, but I do prefer the "before" picture.

I gotta say I was happily stunned when I saw the castle all done up; I thought it was beautiful.

I'm sure the bunting will go, along with the giant jewels that hold it in place, and the crowns (bring them back with an additional one for the sixtieth!), but I hope they keep a lot of the gold accents. After all, the gold gifts that people receive on their fiftieth anniversary isn't taken away from them the following year; instead, it's displayed proudly. Likewise, I sincerely hope the castle gets to keep some of its congratulatory gold. It's earned it!
