  • Opera House destroyed!

I visited Disneyland tonight to see Pirates which was broken, so I went into the opera house to see the Disney 50th show. On the way out I was forced through an ugly, boring, dull, frumpy, crass, off-theme STORE! There was no way out without going through the store and seeing their lame merchandise! What are they going to do? Sell Lincoln plushies or Lincoln logs when (or if) Lincoln returns? This destruction of theme, class, and human dignity is pointless! Poor Lincoln. Poor Walt.

DL invented attractions that exit through stores.

          Cheers.

At least they didn't do what Dollywood has done: An entire park that exits through a store.

That creates QUITE an exiting nightmare as you have to wade through people standing in line and a million pieces of souvenier junk to get out of the park.

            Worst exit idea ever.

The Opera House has exited into the Mad Hatter for as long as I can remember. The Mad Hatter just completed a major renovation and expansion, and I must say that it looks very nice, and I was quite impressed when I walked by it yesterday. Are you saying they put up another shop in the exit lobby? That would be a bit odd... I'll have to check it out tomorrow when I'm over there.

They were doing a remodel as of a couple weeks ago, so this must be their new idea. Instead of exiting out with scenes of upcoming attractions, they piled more merchandice in front of the exiting movie goers.

When Abe goes back in, look for an average of 12 guests an hour. Not exactly brilliant marketing strategy.

I asked Walt what he thought about it, but he was spinning so furiously from so many other previous changes I don't think he'd had time to absorb the temporary Opera House alterations.
Warning: Portions of this attraction are intense and may not be appropriate for younger children.

Haha, if anything Disneyland itself, is one, big shop. With little exception, there is a shop near or right next to every ride, when you are walking out the exit. Small World, Autopia, Space, Jungle Cruise..the list goes on and on...

I don't buy a whole lot of things while at at any of the parks, unless the merchandise itself merits it. By englarge, I am looking for quality stuff, so that's what helps limit my purchases. (sad, huh?)

                    Well, to each their own.

                      Re: Opera House destroyed!

To be clear, the store next to the opera house has expanded right over the old exit. As you try and exit the opera house, you must turn, cross a floor change, and enter a densly packed store. You must navigate around shoppers and off-themed product displays to get to safety. A far cry from the magical exit onto a working turn-of-the-century main street.

The stores use to be magical. They use to be themed and they use to draw you in. Now the stores and the products have no appeal, so they must do whatever they can to get them in your face.

Rather than choose a few products for lowest build cost and highest possible percieved profit, why not simply stock a variety of themed quality products in richly themed stores that could be used as movie sets?

Problem: people are not going into the stores to buy our products!
                      Good Solution: get better products
Evil Solution: build an army of ODV carts and move the stores into the traffic.

Lore is a guy who is usually right on the money (if that's him in the avatar, just look at him - he looks like some kind of mystical prophet sitting on a throne) but I think he missed the mark here. Exiting through a store does not destry the Opera House. Just because you exit through there doesn't mean you have to buy something, you have to exit through somewhere.

I think this assessment explains much of the phenomenon.

Pressler did research that found the average guest only enters a handful of shops during his or her visit. So, his solution was to put the highest-margin best-sellers in every single Disneyland shop. The better solution would be to make the merchandise found in each shop differentiated enough so that the guests see a reason to enter more than one or two shops.

I prefer the set-ups where you have an option whether or not to enter the store--for example, Astro Blasters and Small World. It's nice when they have the space to provide an alternate exit.
