  • Why do they call Disneyland the Magic Kingdom?

I was listening to "Remember: Dreams Come True" yesterday and was wondering how Disneyland got the name "The Magic Kingdom" and if the park is officially known as the Magic Kingdom or not. I now that the Magic Kingdom is the official name for the park at Walt Disney World, but not Disneyland. In fact, I don't ever recall seeing a "Magic Kingdom" sign at Disneyland! The Magic Kingdom isn't even Disneyland's nickname ... that's "The Happiest Place on Earth," right?

If you see the 50 Magical Years movie at the Opera House, Steve Martin tells you it's because of him. He started working in the Main St. Magic Shop and they started calling the place "the Magic Kingdom". Coincidence? I don't think so....

The speil on the train at DL even mentions it as The Magic Kingdom, but I think they refer to WDW as The Magic Kingdom to differentiate it from the other Disney parks in Orlando. I think they "stole" that name from us, but we still retain "The Happiest Place on Earth", which sounds better anyway.

Yeah, they might have a bunch of extra stuff, but we are still happier!

Originally it was called the big flop or Disney's disaster. It took a long time for people to start coming to the park. They appeared just like magic.

Re: Why do they call Disneyland the Magic Kingdom?

They did focus groups and asked people what kind of amusement park they would become obsessed over and never grow tired of, spend tons of money on souvenirs, etc. They all said a theme park based on Elvis, David Copperfield. so they decided on a Magic..King-dom..

This sounds almost like the new name for the Angels baseball team.

The Los Angeles Magic Kingdom of Disneyland Angels of Anaheim.

Re: Why do they call Disneyland the Magic Kingdom?

Disneyland has been known as the Magic Kingdom since about 1957 where it was printed on maps of Disneyland. The fact that it was a place with a castle and brought magic into kids lives. It became its most popular nickname. It was used on tickets and in maps, used in announcements, and published in literature about Disneyland. In a book published in 1998 on Disneyland it is regularly referred to as the Magic Kingdom, with no qualifications as the one in California. As a kid, we always used Magic Kingdom club tickets to Disneyland. The Disneyland Railroad announces a trip "around Magic Kingdom."

Then Pressler in about 1999 allowed the drop of the name during his administration. After that Disneyland publications, maps, and tickets stopped using the name.

While most people think that the Magic Kingdom in Orlando was always "the Magic Kingdom," it was not. When it opened 1971 was known as Walt Disney World. There was no plan for another theme park when it opened in 1971. After it opened both Disneyland and WDW called themselves the Magic Kingdom as a nickname. It was only after Epcot was created, that Disney management faced a problem, what to call the original theme park in Florida. That is when Disney management chose to use "Magic Kingdom." Disneyland kept using the term even after that time on all official tickets, publications and maps.

So Disneyland has been known much longer as the Magic Kingdom, Disneyland about 41 years verse the "official" Magic Kingdom in Florida of 35 years. Even today the Disneyland railroad announces a trip about the Magic Kingdom.

Personally I don't mind Orlando's Magic Kingdom being called that. But it bothers me that many WDW fans want to erase the fact that Disneyland was called the Magic Kingdom long before Florida. They act like Disneyland never was called that. Anyone who purchased tickets to "the Magic Kingdom" in Anaheim for decades find that amusing.
