Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
Wow thanks so much for the update, but the concept image really seems like overkill on the whole pirates theme. I expected a few additions to the front stage, but it looks very transformed. With the pirate mast and everything, seems like they shouldn't even call it Tom Sawyer island anymore.
Haha
What kind of effect will this have on Fantasmic?Last edited by dchun2007; 03-15-2007, 09:31 PM.Currently at DreamWorks Animation SKG

Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
I agree, this pirate thing has gotten a bit out of control. However, looking at the concept art, I doubt all of that will really be there in the final version. For example, the flag pole with Jack Sparrow on it will completly ruin the stage for Fantasmic. Also, the drunk pirate on the shore, I dobut they will realistically put an AA out there. As for the cannons on the island, I thought they were supposed to shoot at "collapsable" chimney's in NOS. But hey, if they shoot the water, I am ok with that. I think this concept art was created during the phase of TSI into Pirate Island rather than TSI into TSI's Pirate Liar.

Yeah, the island isn't really going to look like that. It will be interesting to see the final product, though.

Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
If the energy, and Piratey immersion this concept art conveys were actually accomplished, I'd be cool with it.
Unfortunately, I have a feeling we'll get a wattered-down, on-the-cheap version of this concept.
The project should either be done properly, with the proper amount of funding and appropriate vision and creativity, or simply not done at all.
Too bad I don't think we'll actually get that, considering there's only 2 months before the attraction is set to open, and the amount of time spent planning and Imagineering this project was essentially little-to-none.
...but anyway, I have to admit that concept art looks pretty dang cool, whether we get a finished product like it or not.

Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
It just looks like Pirate characters from the ride floating in front of and doin' stuff on the island...
I agree. I love POTC as a classic attraction, and I love the movies. But I've had enough! My mind won't rest

Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
Well it is just concept art, after all!
I think they were trying to show all the new stuff on the island put in the forefront so one can see it. Like the two pirates fencing on the balancing rock, would not be on the dock, but rather in the middle of the island, but how else to show it, then in the forefront?
Good catch on the Mark Twain and the 50th banner!

Re: Concept Art for Pirate's Lair
I don't think the pirates and set props in the drawing are meant to be AA figures or permanent installations of any kind. I think the drawing represents the stunt show that they recently auditioned for. They called for sword fighting skills, zip line abilities, and athleticism, and that's what the concept art portrays. I'm sure the flags and masts are props that can easily be removed for Fantasmic and the other atmospheric pirates are probably ensemble cast members for the stunt show. Water explosions from cannonfire and a small boat would be in line with the show description as well, so I interpret this photo to be of the show more than the Pirate Lair makeover of TSI as an attraction to explore.

Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer Island Concept Art
Looks pretty ok, not great, but ok, doesn't really reconcile with Frontierland, what do you guys think?"Walt Disney World may have more than Disneyland, but Disneyland has quality, and quality triumphs over quantity" -DL_CRAZE
