  • Did Hojo used to be known as Grand Hotel?

Just curious....there is a 1970s era postcard on ebay with a hotel tower that looks almost identical to the original Disneyland Hotel, and it is referred to as The Grand Hotel on Number One Hotel Way. I seem to remember years ago seeing an obviously closed hotel tower that looked like a copy of the DL hotel.

No, the Grand Hotel closed down and was ultimately demolished.

      You've got a good eye.

I was told the Grand Hotel was almost an exact clone of the Disneyland Hotel's Sierra Tower (supposedly using the same basic expanded blueprint plans from the same architect), and sat almost directly opposite the Sierra Tower on the other side of Disney property. Almost the Sierra Tower's twin sister.

Don't know if this is the same postcard shot that eBay has...but here it is:

And here's a dusk shot of it taken from the Disneyland Hotel. That's the Grand in the far distance there:

DisneyIPresume has already answered your question that appears in your thread's title: No. It was never known as or was a part of HoJo.

When did they demolish that hotel? I think I recall staying there in '93 or '94, b/c I remember staying somewhere that looked like that but can't find it for the life of me now.

Cool, thanks for the info. Any info on the circumstances of its demise? What is on the Grand's former site now?

If it's the same hotel I'm thinking of, it was rather ratty and took up quite a bit of space.

It was only ratty because it's owners allowed it to become that way. The property, however, could have been remodeled into a gem. It had the dinner theatre inside, as well as large ballrooms with beautiful chandeliers, and two restaurants. The pool area was spartan, but again could have been upgraded.

Disney bought it and thought about renovating it for about a second, but instead has chosen to use the space as a parking lot, currently.

                  Google is a wonderful thing.

                  March 22, 1998:

In Anaheim, California, the Grand Hotel, located just east of Harbor Blvd on Freedman Way, is imploded at 6:45 a.m. by Controlled Demolition, Incorporated in a blast that lasts just over twenty seconds. A crowd of about 200 spectators watch from the Santa Ana freeway's Freedman Way off ramp. Other spectators observe the building's destruction from their rooms in the Disneyland and Disneyland Pacific Hotels, and even atop the Matterhorn. The metal components of the building will be recycled, and the concrete will be pulverized on-site to form the base of the new Disneyland parking area.
I recall there were lots of news crews and members of the public there with personal camcorders. I'm kinda surprised I couldn't find a single video clip of the big boom. Anybody out there got one?

If it is the one I'm thinking of, no. I think I stayed there also in the late 80's or early 90's. If memory serves me, it would have been about where Disneyland Dr now comes through.

I believe the red area was a miniature golf/video arcade and the blue area was where the hotel was.

And there were also High Tension Power Lines on galvanized angle steel lattice towers cutting across that swath next to the street - the same transmission lines that cut across the old DL Parking Lot went through here. The strip that the MiniGolf was on was probably leased from the power company, and the Grand Hotel site would have an easement for the driveway.

I have a series of still shots on 35mm film of the implosion around here somewhere, taken from the freeway overpass a bit to the east...

The camera wasn't fast, so there are only three or four "during" shots, and then a big cloud of dust.

If they start building the Cast Member Parking Structure there, that's a sure sign they're getting started on the Third Theme Park, even if they haven't announced it yet.

The Grand Hotel was bought by Disney in the mid 1990's. In early 1998 it was imploded, Las Vegas casino-style. That implosion was sort of the first big thing that let everyone know the area around Disneyland was changing and becoming "The Anaheim Resort".

Shortly after its implosion and land clearing, Disney turned the property into the surface parking lot that it remains to this day.
