  • Port Disney, What Might Have Been.

Just found this and I had no idea that Disney's original plans for DS in Long Beach were so elaborate. How cool it would be to see this come to fruition in the future. Who knows if it is even possible anymore, but one can dream.
    Check it out for yourself..

Aw man, that would've been awesome!! I can't believe Sun Wheel and CA Screamin' came from this project. No wonder I love these rides lol

Maybe they could still build this? ... nah
I am a rabid Disney fan. Possible future Imagineer (already designing rides for it)... I've only been to Disneyland. I'm hoping to go to Disney World this summer for the first time, and TDR might be possible in 3 years.

Yeah the funny thing is that the coaster and Sun Wheel were only supposed to be pay per ride. I think they would have been a better fit at Port Disney. The ocean view from the Sun Wheel would have been cool. I think we just get teased with great ideas like this, they dont actually get built. I wonder if this would have been an extension of the DLR or a seperate resort all together.

        Very cool.

I live in Long Beach and I'm wondering exactly where they planned on building this. That's a HUGE project!! I can't think of where they would have built it all.........

Much of the project would have been built on landfill.

The Queen Mary was part of the project, and you can see the ocean liner in some of the conceptual artwork.

Yup, it would have been very cool.

BTW. many of the concepts did make it to TDS...
For example, the "Queen Mary" did make it to TDS.... as "S.S. Colombia". That also gives
you an approximate area that they were thinking of building.

Finally, notice the monorail track around it in the plan.

Interesting. I would have liked to have seen them do this. It would change downtown Long Beach and the 710, that's for sure!

I remember when the Wrather corporation was operating the Queen Mary, in anticipation of the Disneyfacation of Long Beach--they did a great promotion that summer, "The Queen's Big Bash" all themed as if the Queen Mary was getting ready to set sail. They had face characters of period celebrities, Queen Elizabeth, period tourists who would slip you pre-printed notes to meet them at the back of the ship at 9:00 PM, which was when they did a 1940's radio show with singers & dancers and the finale was fireworks set to swing music--I went once with my best friend, had such a good time that I brought my Mom down from Santa Maria to see it. Oh, those were the days...

WOW. That would've been massive. Certainly would've added to the magic. I wonder what SeaWorld thought of it?

I thought the project was to be built on the old LB Naval Station which is located Just East of the the Vincent Thomas Bridge in LB.

Here is a link to a map.

I may be wrong but, I'm almost sure. That area works well because it wouldn't have eliminated any shipping berths.

I was thinking that it would have been that same spot too actually.
                        Thanks for the map!

Glad to see that some of the concepts for Port Disney were recreated and expanded for Tokyo DisneySea. I'm still disappointed that the original plans didn't come to fruition though.

I think it would have been pretty incredible to have a disney resort as the center piece for a functioning port. This certainly would have been a sight to see.

I was so excited when this was first announced in the early 90's. It was also fun going to the Queen Mary back when Disney operated it, seeing the Disney trash cans (that looked like the ones around HM) and the CM's with the Disney name tags and the great attitudes of everyone. I loved sitting on the back of the ship, looking out going "Thats where the new park is going to be". There was even talk of a monorail linking DL to DisneySea.

Then the whole project was scrapped, due to the environmental impact of landfill. Funny thing is, they keep adding onto the Port of LB with landfill and you dont hear anything about "environmental impacts" like you heard back then
