  • Gross Space Mountain Experience

I went to DL with my Dad and brothers on Tuesday as a last hoorah before my brothers start school. It wasn't the best experience in the world. It was ridiculously hot, although that isn't Disney's fault. When we got there Space Mountain, Indy and Pirates were all closed which was a little downer but nothing too bad since SM and Pirates were supposedly opening later that day.

WARNING: The following is not for those who are easily grossed out.

When Space Mountain finally opened, the line was very short (I'm assuming because no one wanted to wait in the sun). Anyway, when we were getting into the train my Dad (who was sitting behind my brother and I) noticed that the floor was wet. We laughed but were kinda curious why that was. He said "Oh, someone probably spilled a drink or something." Once the ride was over, he made this grossed out sound. When I asked him what was wrong he said that the handle bars were slimy and that someone hadn't spilled something; they had gotten sick. We all were about to be sick ourselves. We sat and waited to get to the loading dock. When we did, we jumped out and ran to tell the CM before someone else sat in it. Well, the guy was too busy telling us to stand back and tell the next group to get in so, a kid sat in the seat my Dad had just been sitting in. He was looking around like "Wait, why is this wet?" When my Dad tried to tell the Dad and his kid, the CM yelled at us to get away from the train.

Now, I understand that we can't stand there while they are moving the trains but really...letting people sit in a seat that you have just been informed that someone got sick in? It was really gross.

    Just thought I would share...Bleh.

Funny thing is you probably weren't the first to sit in it, who knows how many guests sat in it before the CMs payed it any mind.

With Space Mountain they get really preoccupied with their insane load/unload times that they must stick to. Sadly that gets the priorities mixed up in situations like this one.

            Re: Gross Space Mountain Experience

From the looks of it, the CM yelled at you to stand clear so they could dispatch - and hadn't stopped to figure out why yet...

But they had good cause to be short with you - Space Mountain is a "finicky" ride to run, they have to keep cycling the rockets through the station and out again on a very tight schedule every 20 seconds or so, especially if they have most of the rockets running...

If you delay the loading process in the station too much the cars back up, and if all the brake zones are full they get a "Cascade" and it causes an E-stop of the whole ride - then the ride is down for 45 minutes as they evacuate and reset. And they really don't want to do that, so they try to clear the train and send it out.

The time to get someone's attention was when you were arriving back at Unload, IIRC the proper term is a "Code V" or a "Protein Spill", among other euphemisms used to keep from grossing out everyone in line. (The ones who know the secret words will still wince.)

They can send the car through the station empty and shunt it off to the side (Left Turn into the maintenance shop) for a cleaning. But after you are out of the car they want to follow normal procedures and get the next batch of Guests in and launch it ASAP.

At the point you were at (already out of the train) you back off and let the people get in the rocket to keep the trains moving - but explain it to the Load CM. If a Cascade is imminent and they don't have time to let the people get back out at Load, they can send the train ahead, have it switched into Maintenance and get the people out of there, and load them on a clean train.

That would have been much better than waiting to say something... that's gross. Sorry that you had to deal with that.

But who the hecks pukes on that ride anyway?? It's pretty tame, at least I think so!

That could have caused a vomit chain reaction just like that scene in "Stand By Me"

Sit in puke or delay the ride by 45 minutes.... hmm.
