  • Will Disney ever get the nerve to build Progress City the "real" EPCOT?

Will Disney ever get up the nerve to create Progress City the real Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT)?

As most of you know Walt was always about the next new thing, at the end he had moved beyond theme parks and his latest and last dream was to take what they had learned from Disneyland and apply it to how people would live, not just play, this was to be Progress City or EPCOT which has absolutely nothing to do with the EPCOT center in Fl as you may know.

It was to be a living working blueprint for how people could live and work in the future, a miniature of it has been seen at the end of the Carousel of progress attractions when they were open.

As usualy Disney was at least 50 years ahead of his time, was this last dream to much for people to comprehend? Certainly it was for the Disney co, they shrank from the challenge and didnt try to attempt to make his last and greatest dream come true, perhaps only the genius dreamer himself could have accomplished it.

2018-2020 would have been the real EPCOT's 50th anniversary when the rest of the world would have caught up with the concept. If you are familiar with what ideas have been released Progress city was to be more or less self sustaining community where families would work, live and play, very similar to Palo Solari's Archology concept of a city-building. Using mass transit in the form of monorails and peoplemovers allowing homes to be built in a park like setting free of the roads and parking needed for cars where kids could play freely and safely.

Today more than ever we need Disney's vision as we face a very uncertain and what looks to be a dark future in the coming years as resources we have made ourselves dependent on are on the decline and our need now to no longer ignore our impact on the environment.

Would Disney if he had lived and completed Progress City have shown us all "how to do it" how to live in harmony with the world around us and with eachother, and would this have impacted the way we all now live as he had hoped? Or was this last dream just to grandiose even for the master dreamer? Was it just another example of 60' Utopian ideal of a model city that has fallen by the wayside like so many dreams of that time like the Space Age another direction for mankind that Disney believed in very much but has since been deferred to some future generation? Any thoughts?

I personally believe that Disney co will never attempt such a thing and never for the high idealistic reasons of their founder.

Prehaps it takes some other dreamer with the financial power and a new similar dream to make this come true some day, or perhaps things are as cynical as they seem and no one would care to try and utilize technology and urban planning to try and show us a better way to live?

EPCOT was never as fleshed out as much as people like to believe. Nowhere near enough to really go forward with. People such as Le Courbusier fleshed out their ideas much further and were already established in the field were also unable to build their master communities.

Progress City was just a big model.

The closest Disney will ever come to creating EPCOT the way it was envisioned is with their planned community Celebration in Florida.

TWDC is not in the business of building cities of the future. They are in the entertainment business and unfortunately that is just the way it is. I am not saying that this is right or is in line with what Walt Disney envisioned his Company to become but that is the reality of today's Disney brand.
        Class of 2005...

Yes...that is part of the original Disneyland Carousel of Progress's model of Progress City. But it's only a small part of the original that they moved and installed in Florida. The original was much bigger. Even this old PanaVue Slide photo shows only part of it:

That is a portion of the massive Progress City model that used to be on display after the Carousel of Progress, today the second floor of Innoventions.

Which Disney has removed itself from.

Actually, I think Walt could have done it. Essentially, it would have relied heavily on corporate sponsorship and a great deal more work evolving the idea. However, if larger corporations got involved and help finance the idea, some smaller form of the city could have been built.

It could probably still get built today in an a more modern form using different technologies, of course. It just takes the determination to make something like this happen.

If Walt had lived, I believe he would have built his city. After all, he did everything else he wanted to do, things that others called impossible. But the company that bears his name will never do this. They are not visionaries or great risk takers. They are in the business of maximizing share-holder value.

One of the biggest things working against EPCOT was the major corporations. What is known is that Walt wanted these leaders of industry to establish public R&D departments within the city.

I can't help but think how similar Progress City looks to the new hotel/casino complex in Vegas....called oddly enough, City Center, by MGM Entertainment. Talk about corporate sponsorship!

If that is a recent photo from WDW, shame, shame on the lack of maintenance. I've seen outhouses with less crud buildup.

I agree (about the vision w/ Walt and today's vision--lack of)

To that end I'd like the Internet community to join me in reminding the Disney company that "it all started with Walt." As you can see below we've created some T-shirts, plus a few simple graphics that you can copy and paste into your websites to let folks know how you feel.

That's the Magic Kingdom for you. There are perks to being "most visited in the world".

Ha like a year ago... I did the college program so I guess you could say WDW has it's own little place in my heart. However DL is still by far the best!
