  • Is The Davy Jones Effect Just Too Scary?

I remember when the renovated Pirates opened, the Dvay Jones "waterfall" effect used to go down to the water so you would go through Davy Jones' face and feel the foggy mist on your head. Now a days, it
s in the air and barely touches you, so you have to look up, you no longer go through. Did they stop this because it was just to scary for kids to go right through the Davy Jones' face?

I dunno but I wish it was like the original! The illusion isn't as fun now.

Disney is now cutting back on the amount of fog used in POTC, they make cutbacks in everything else

I've seen it once where the smoke effect was broken, so the tunnel was dark and you only heard him. It set a much darker and more ominous tone to the scene than it normally does, and I think this was an improvement (although only do to a malfunction). They should totally do away with the dumb thing altogether.

However, to answer your question, DL_Craze, I have no clue.
I only started going on Pirates again (and going to DL, for that matter) back in Aug. of 2006. Prior to that, I went on it in 1995, but can say that I much prefer the classic version of the ride, when compared to the current one.

wow i didn't know they changed the waterfall effect thing, i think the last time i was there it went all the way to the water, and that was back a couple months back.

I highly doubt they changed it intentionally because it was scaring people. Probably just the result of cutbacks, I agree.

Re: Is The Davy Jones Effect Just Too Scary?

When Disney first introduced the effect at a Cast Member preview I really enjoyed it, but having went on it in its current state it really looks out of place not going all the way down to the water.

i think it looks crappy...not gonna lie...i went opening weekend for the new installments back in 06, and it looked amazing!!! but now yeah it just looks bad...i did not know about these cut backs...to me it just seems like it has worn down and it needs to be fixed...

I believe that Al Lutz mentioned that the effect was never perfected and WDI had planned to fix it at some point. But clearly it isn't been fixed.

well for me the fun isn't so much the effect but its the voice of Bill Nighy, i just like hearing him the voice of Davy Jones, but i do think they should put the effect back as it was though. i mean as much money as Disneyland makes on a daily basis, they shouldn't have too many cutbacks.
