I'm not sure what exactly the OPer saw, but if a laserdisc is anything like a DVD, it can get scratched or dirty which can result in distorted imagery. I have rented discs that look like someone let their kids play frisbee with it, or use it for skeet shooting ...... sometimes they are unwatchable. I know as I listen to CDs in my car, they sometimes "skip" if I hit a bump, or pull extraneous gees going around a curve ... and I think it has gotten worse as my car has aged ..... perhaps the Star Tours cabin 3 laserdisc suspension system is wearing out ...

hmm... now that i think of it.. I doo seem to remember that Busch Garden's simulator uses lazer disk for its movie... perhaps disney also uses lazer disk now..... (or DVD now)
it can get dirty meaning the lense needsd to get cleaned every so often and that might make sence why it looks messed up??

No, I've riden Star Tours enough to know that at DL it's still film. Pops and scratches are film defects, while LD and DVD defects look very different. They look "digital". For instance, macroblocking is a digital dropout that causes a part of the image to become distorted digital blocks. If ST was on disc, the film defects such as pops and cratches would never change. My Blu-rays/DVDs

I second what Captveg said, it is film. I asked a CM last time I was there if it was film even though I was sure it was (hence the passion) and he had to call to the tower and found out it was. So got on it 3 more times in different simulatiors and I am sure I saw the print that Disneyfan was talking about too, but I liked it. Damaged film is my obsession right now, in fact the 16mm film I am working on right now I have hand prossed myself to give it that damaged look and then I have run it though a dirty projector.
Now to answer your questions Captveg. I will admit defeat in that fact that most people will not see the difference between film and a digital projection and that they would even prefer it. Just one more place for film to get taken over I guess.
And for home movies yes I like DVD over VHS (when the bloody things don't have any scratches on them). But I can be a bit of a puseist when it comes to theater projetion. If it was shot in film, I want to see a print, it it was shot in analog video I want to see it in bata max, and if it was shot digital I want to see it on digibata. You really can't tell much difference but it is there.
And Buster Keton all the way! The stone faced man rules! I have a teacher that loves the guy and it kind of wore off on me. But Grace Kelly is not without her charm, there will never be anouther one like her.
BYU huh. Well I grew up in Utah and that is were I got my start in the "pro market" making wedding videos. I really hated it but the money was pretty good! . I went to Weber State for a while studying history, no point to even take a media/film class from that place. I thought about going to UofU or BYU when I wanted to go to filmschool. But I don't have the grades so CalArts it was for me!

I am confident that the distortion was not from the lens due to the fact that the pops and scratches only appeared at certain times, not throughout the movie.
While I agree that film does look better and offers better depth on screen, the benefits of going Digital far outweigh the look of film. To an average guest, a pristine screen that has a digital "look" would probably fare better than looking at an obviously faked film projection with scratches and pops.

It is true that film can get pretty messed up, but I have to disagree with you about digital projection looking as good as film projection. A digital projection still cannot come close to the depth that film has. Why do you think that none of the mainstream theaters have yet to switch to digital?

I see you live in Rancho Santa Margarita, thats in the OC right? I can think of a few places down in the OC that have some digital presentations but all, I am pretty sure no. Most theaters still use 35mm. You might be thinking of digital sound which is very common.

But since most movies are still made in film it is actually cheaper to still show a film on a print.

The Giant Screen Edwards over in the mall uses Digital Projection, as well as Digital Audio.

I have a question. If they went to Digital on ST then wouldn't the film be much crisper? If the film looked better than wouldn't it make the experience better? I would think that an image without scratches or anything would be 100% better on a ride where you are trying to trick the mind into believing you are really going through a giant ice crystal in a starspeeder.Originally posted by drunkmomthis is my first buzzed post in the DMCA -- I'm really in this club because I'm a bitch more than anything. Also it would be as easy as you think to convert the Star Tours simulators to digital. First they would have to put in digital projectors (duh) . Then they would have to find the original negative (which most likely belongs to Lucus and he sure as heck is not going to let disney have it). Then you would have to restore the negitive. That would be a frame by frame prossess in which you would color correct each frame and then you would erase any scratchs, 24 frames per second one frame at a time,(I've done it and it sucks) it would take about 3 months. Then you would have to talecine the film into a digital state (ie make it into a digital movie). You would also have to correct the frame rate of 24 frames per second into video which is 29.7/30 frames per second. This of couse requires you to add frames making the digital film less like the origanal. Then you would have to re-program the ride to the new digital system. All and all it would be just as easy to make a new film which is what I think needs to happen, but there is the little Lucas problem...

No because like I said before digital projetion does not have the depth of film. So you would lose the effect that the screen is a window into space since it would apper very flat even to someone who does not know the difference and I think that would ruin the effect the ride is trying to make.

They could use the same system they used to turn the SW trilogy into digital...the quality of those movies is amazing. And I'm sure there are digital projection systems that can handle 24 fps, which would help with the film look.

Well I am not sure what system you are talking about when they restored Star Wars. I know that they resotored the trilogy in 1997 and as far as I know they used the system that I explained, I could be wrong though. And yes if they projected it digitaly at 24p it will look a bit of the look of the speed of the film, but remember it still runs at 29.7 fps since 24p is more of an effect then a actual frame rate and video almost always runs at that frame rate (29.7/30 fps). But 24p is relatively new and therefore not very trustworthy though. Most of the time someting has to be shoot in 24p to really make it work anyway. But that still would not fix the depth problem. If they made a new movie that is shoot on 24p on an HD camera since that is all Lucas works with now it would work really well, and yes even some of the depth issues could be taken care of with digital effects, kind of. So I think the only way to really fix it is to put a new movie in the ride.
But I like the film the way it is....Last edited by Boingonut; 02-14-2005, 01:39 AM.

The robot in Speeder #1 looked like he was from the Possum show In The Goofy Movie!! His visor and face looked like it is going to fall off. This hasn't changed since then. This was in november 2003, Month later didn't look any better.1st Amendment-Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Their was a plan to upgrade Star Tours when Episode 1 came out based on the pod race sequence from that movie and use technology that was developed for that "Stormchaser" ride at Tokyo Disneyseas. They even went as far as redoing the giftshop at the WDW MGM star tours to look like a tatooine trading outpost and even sell pins that read "Star Tours: Tatooine Express" with red and gold coloring instead of the traditional blue/grey/white (These are still available btw). From what I understand Lucas and Eisner had a falling out and that put the project on hold. At this point we can only hope that by the time Lucas is done with Episode III Disneyt can mend fences with him and get this project approved.

E-Ticket's plan for rennovating Star Tours:
1. Re-do the video with CGI instead of the old miniature models (This only bothers me when you get really close to the X-wings in formation... they look so fake!)
2. Make sure that every simulator is synch'ed up properly
3. Have unique destinations for each of the simulators... 1 trip to Endor, 1 trip to Coruscant, 1 trip to Tatooine, 1 trip to Hoth, and maybe even skim the surface of most of these planets.
4. Have SW characters patrol the area in & around the attraction (hooray for Wookiees!)
5. Re-do the flight attendant greeting video (does anybody besides me think that lady looks a bit like a teapot?)
6. Take down the Energizer posters at the exit!
7. Keep the bad edit in the comets part. I used to hate this, but it grew on me over time.
8. Make the queue more interactive. It would be great if those weird orange lights would blink and make sounds when people passed through them."I could never convince the financiers that Disneyland was feasible because dreams offer too little collateral"
