Kai Tak Fantasy (or Kai Tak Fantasy Park)
The former runway tip in the Kai Tak Development Area has excellent potential to be developed into a tourism and entertainment hub. We propose setting up on this site a recreational landmark — Kai Tak Fantasy. On top of recreation facilities, it can be turned into an "edutainment" destination which will reflect Kai Tak's unique aviation, maritime and transportation history.

Kai Tak fantasy will become reality

A place of fantasy will be created near what was the end of the Kai Tak airport runway jutting into the harbor.
"The former runway tip in the Kai Tak development area has excellent potential to be developed into a tourism and entertainment hub," CY Leung said. "We propose setting up on this site a recreational landmark - Kai Tak Fantasy.

"On top of recreation facilities, it can be turned into an `edutainment' destination, which will reflect Kai Tak's unique aviation, maritime and transportation history."

Leung also said he has high hopes of the Kai Tak area offering a good example of "where we can enhance the quality of living."

Asked what will make fantasy a reality, Leung said the secretary for development is to provide details.

In fact, Secretary for Development Paul Chan Mo-po holds a post-policy briefing on his portfolio this morning.

But adding to the Kai Tak Fantasy picture in a paper posted yesterday, the Development Bureau said the feature will "serve as a tourism and entertainment hub, with global significance for both local people and tourists."

New People's Party legislator Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said Hong Kong needs to increase its investment in tourism.

"The cruise terminal will be located at Kai Tak," she noted, "so it makes sense to have a theme park and other entertainment facilities to keep up with the competition."

Ng Kam-mee, a professor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong's geography and resource management department, also looked at the Kai Tak Fantasy as complementary to the terminal.

"I believe overseas tourists will be lured to visit the recreation hub to learn the history of Kai Tak," he said.

But he added: "We don't want that the site will be developed into another theme park like Ocean Park."

Also at the site, the multi-purpose, 50,000-seat Kai Tak Sports Complex should be ready in 2019 after a projected outlay of about HK$19 billion.

Hong Kong Stadium will be adapted as a district-based facility with 10,000 seats once the Kai Tak complex is ready.

The following quoted from the development bureau
Separately, the runway tip is currently planned as a tourism hub in the KTD. We propose a Kai Tak Fantasy Park at this prominent location to serve as a tourism and entertainment hub with global significance for both local people and tourists.
The pic is probably still subject to change.

Nice, I remember landing in Kai Tak when I was a kid. Definitely, a harrowing experience.

The QE2 has been bought by Asian investors and they could potentially dock it at the runway to make for a floating hotel. This would be a huge draw for international tourists.

Hong Kong has enough people. I went there in December. Boy, it was crowded. People were everywhere. The streets are noisy. It was fairly cheap for food and stuff despite what I've expected for a large city. HK Disneyland was a highlight. Very much like Anaheim's version in layout. Had a hard time getting used to only Chinese food in the park, and I'm Chinese, but largely American. Oh well...

Comet Cafe (Tomorrowland) serves American fast food and Main Street Corner Cafe (Main Street) also serves western food. Royal Banquet Hall also have western food available. You probably did not check your guide map.

I didn't check my guide map. I went to the first restaurant available across from the Small World and noticed that they didn't offer a choice of cuisine. You can only get rice or noodles. I wasn't there for the full day so I could not explore the offerings sufficiently. I found it strange that the theming was English style, yet the food was Chinese. It was largely the same when I went on a side trip to Macau and stayed at the Venetian. The city and the casino mostly served Chinese food. The exceptions were McDonald's and the famous Macau pork sandwich (half Chinese I guess).

There are many good videos on youtube of planes landing (seemly, barely) at Kai Tak.

Sounds like The Festival of Foods to me. I've been there once and the food is not bad, but personally I think it should be torn down to be replaced by new attractions. It is simply occupying too much space and most people prefer the Royal Banquet Hall anyway.

The rendering looks like a glorified cruise ship terminal. What would be the incentive to make a trip to that side side of Victoria Harbour?
