Disney eyeing theme park site in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co (DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is looking to build a theme park on a 500-acre (202-hectare) site in southern Malaysia, a business weekly reported on Saturday.

Citing unnamed sources, the Edge said the theme park, to be located in Bardar Nusajaya in the Iskandar development zone, would be ready six years after a deal was signed, according to early proposals.

The proposed Disneyland theme park and resort is slated to be bigger than Hong Kong Disneyland and about the size of Tokyo Disney Resort, it said.

The government unveiled a $105 billion blueprint late last year
to transform the southern tip of Johor state, which neighbours Singapore, into a regional economic zone for industry, logistics, trade and leisure.

Although the talks with Disney are progressing fast, discussions with other theme park operators, including Warner Bros Entertainment and MGM (MGM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), have not ceased, the Edge said.

"However, a deal with Walt Disney looks most promising as it has expressed its seriousness and has come out with specifications on its requirements," it quoted a source as saying.

If the talks with Disney are successful, a deal is expected to be signed by the middle of next year, it added.

Malaysia's state-controlled UEM World (UEMW.KL: Quote, Profile, Research) is developing Bandar Nusajaya, a township in southwest Johor.
The 2,200 square km (850 sq miles) Iskandar zone has so far clinched at least $6 billion in investments, including a $4.7 billion maritime park proposed by Dubai World and Malaysia's infrastructure-to-energy group MMC Bhd

Even though the area is bigger than HKDL does that mean Disney will utilitize the whole area for the park. Look at HK Disney there's still pockets of open space still not been used. I think Disney will still think of building mini-parks until the attendance has reached a certain number before expansion can take place.

argh...this rumour has been going on for about half a year already. perhaps, like TDR, it will be run by a malaysian company under a license? anw, no offense to muslims out there, i was wondering if piglet or 3 little pigs be seen in this park if the deal is to materialise.

Every time I hear a rumour of a new Disney park, I can't help but get a little excited. However, it is the last thing they need right now. The consolidation of existing parks - especially with DCA's makeover, and hopefully a similar commitment to HKDL - is far more important.

Besides, I do remember reading some Disney official categorically stating that no new parks would be built in the near future...

I think it only makes sense for Disney to talk to anyone who is interested to build a theme park. Who wouldn't want a Disney Park in their country? But is it the right deal for them? That's the key question.

The only reason why Malaysia is wanting to build a Disney park is because Singapore is building Universal Studios. Singapore is also planning to build a Sands Casino too, even though Macao got the Venetian.

ORWEN: Venetian? Oh! You mean Macao got some Venetian blinds! I see what you mean--only, wouldn't a Disney theme park have been more exciting?

ORGOCH: If'n it weren't gonna' be any bigger 'n Ping Pong Dizzyland, I say Macao might as well stick with the dang Venetian blinds--whatever the heck THEM is...

They are having these talks not because Singapore is building Universal Studios . The talks have been going on even before Resorts World at Sentosa pulled Universal Studios in as an attraction to win the bid.

These talks were on in line with the government's vision to develop the southern part of the country. If Disneyland were to be built in Johor[ a southern sate of Malaysia], it will complement Universal Studios and make both nation a must visit place in Asia. it will definitely would not affect HKDL status because Hong Kong have its own charm.

Not true. You can expect any new Disney park in Asia to have an effect on Hong Kong Disneyland attendance wise, especially if it is more fully built.

Like I said, just because they are talking, it does not mean a park will be built. Disney will require the Malaysian govt to invest quite a bit of money.

Disney talks to anyone who is interested in its products and rightly so. But whether the other party can actually afford it is another matter.

Asa, what you said were very true. This happened to Singapore's government many years ago when they approached Disney with a piece of land near Sentosa but they were not willing to invest in terms of money. So the plan fell through and the land they offered were smaller than what Hong Kong has . That's why Disneyland is in Hong Kong now.It was supposed to be in Singapore but because of all these factors it went to Hong Kong.

However the Malaysian government have told reporters in earlier reports that they are willing to offer in terms of land [which is much bigger than the lands offered by Hong Kong and Singapore] and also money and that is why the possibility of Disney going into Malaysia is big.

The Malaysian government is into big projects as a sign of the country's progress and pride so it wouldn't be surprising it would invest big bucks into a Disney park, and if it's close to Singapore with Universal then the whole area becomes a multi day stop. Remember this is the same country that paid a bunch of money to get a helicopter to bring a Malaysian expedition team close to the top of Mt. Everest so don't underestimate their willingness to spend money in the cause of national pride.

I am a Malaysian and my government paid RM 102mln(1USD=RM 3.40) to send a man to space so why not they spend some money and get some returns from the park. The government's investing arm have said they will pull investment from either one of the well known theme park operators, it either Disney which Reuters had reported discussions have been going very fast and detailed or other operators like Warner Brothers or perhaps Six Flags.

Disney's terms could be very harsh. But I also know Malaysia has been known for spending money on useless projects. I think Disney will look for a seaside area, probably even its own private island.
