Rat Meat Sold as Lamb in China...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/04/world/asia/rat-meat-sold-as-lamb-in-china-highlights-fears.html?_r=0

In an announcement intended to show that the government is serious about improving food safety, the Ministry of Public Security said over the Internet on Thursday that the police had caught traders in eastern China who bought rat, fox and mink flesh and sold it as mutton. But that and other cases of meat smuggling, faking and adulteration that were also featured in Chinese newspapers and Web sites on Friday were unlikely to instill confidence in consumers already queasy over many reports about meat, fruit and vegetables laden with disease, toxins, banned dyes and preservatives.

Shanghai diners fed mink and fox...

Shanghai's residents have joked for years that the city's hot pot restaurants substitute cat meat for lamb.

Not quite, according to the city's police; the lamb is actually more likely to be rat, fox or mink.

On Friday, 63 suspects were arrested for a racket that makes horse meat in hamburgers seem positively palatable.

For the past four years, the police said, the gang had taken the small mammals, doused their flesh in dye and preservatives, and sold it as lamb "at farmers' markets in Jiangsu and Shanghai".

How can Disney be sure that the food it serves at Shanghai Disneyland will be of the highest quality when this goes on?

Would you be afraid to eat out in Shanghai after seeing these reports?

in a city that is already accustomed to its food being cooked in oil dredged from the sewers, and where more than 16,000 putrefying pig carcasses were found dumped in a river that provides drinking water earlier this year.
[S]ince the beginning of the year ... a total of 904 people were arrested for selling fake, poisonous or contaminated meat and more than 1,700 underground butchers and processors were closed down.

Do the government's crackdowns give you confidence? Hearing how bad things are to begin with makes me think maybe I wouldn't be confident about the food in Shanghai.

We are talking about China. I think that taking a look at the government's past track records regarding health & safety, environmental responsibility, product copyright and licencing enforcement, and food safety ALL give cause for great concern.

Fur is a major Chinese export. So when you see those fur lined hoods, think of the animal it really came from, and what the rest of the carcass was used for.

I think this would dissuade me from wanting to spend my vacation dollars in China.

Not only that. They serve old food and beverages in China. In restaurants, stores, on airplanes and most places imaginable.

Why else would they have fox and mink meat? But where do the rats come from? Are they farmed for food - in the sense they were always intended to be sold as lamb?

Quite possibly, they are farmed just like the minks, cats, dogs, rabbits and so on for their fur.

It may sound weird but yes cats and dogs are raised to use their fur in clothing in china.

Their people are not individuals but seen as property of the government.

I avoid buying from china as much as I may until they start to respect life of all beings plants and animal not just human.

I think their respect of humans has a lot of room for improvement too.

Food safety is a major concern in mainland china!

but fortunately Hong Kong SAR is quite strict in food safety!
