  • Will Shanghai be a multi-park/hotel resort?

Does anyone know if there's a master plan to eventually make Shanghai Disneyland into a large resort with another park and other shopping/parks/hotels/etc? What about Hong Kong? I'm just curious.

Any info is much appreciated, thanks!

I don't think anything's been publicly said about either resort, but I would imagine that both have long term plans to expand.

HK already has rumours of a third hotel and a Downtown Disney and far as I know there is land for a second gate. Which is probably what its limit will be, so to speak.

As for Shanghai, well I guess the sky's the limit right now, they certainly have the land but it all depends on how SDL does. If it ticks all the boxes they're expecting, then sure I could see them having three gates but its a long way off, probaly by the mid-'30's.

Yes. They got enough space and plotted out future hotels and a spot for a second gate.

I believe SDL specifically has land earmarked for 3 gates, HKDL has an expansion plot specifically for a second with option to continue land reclamation for a third. Realistically I don't see HKDL going beyond two parks for a long time if ever, but Shanghai potentially could push to a third in the next few decades.

In terms of timelines though, Anaheim, HK and maybe Tokyo are the only resorts that are remotely likely to see a new gate in the next decade.

Who knows though, Shanghai could take off like a rocket.

DLP, HKDL, and Shanghai were all built with master plans to allow for future growth through both hotels and additional gates.

In China you can build anything when the government wants it. If the last pandas on earth live next to SDL and they want to put a park there, the Chinese government will start the dozers.

A few years ago The Oriental Land Company was exploring something more like the Rassulo championed Urban Entertainment Center somewhere outside of Tokyo. A sort of indoor theme park, possibly water park, shopping and dining complex, and hotel all in one. There have also been stories about increasing frustration with The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney Imagineering which has created an interest in opening a third, non-Disney theme park.

think it's just the one park for now but multiple hotels for sure.

I remember reading an article somewhere, can't remember where I'm afraid saying the final plan was for three parks the other two being based on EPCOT and Animal Kingdom because of the Chinese's love of technology and zoos. Personally I doubt if we'll ever see another EPCOT. I suspect all new parks will follow a 'magic kingdom' style mix of different themed areas as Disneysea and the new California Adventure do. I'm not saying this is good or bad just how I see things going in the future.
