  • News Disney Resort operator posts biggest sales drop

The operator of the 2 Disney amusement parks in Japan says it posted its biggest quarterly sales decline because of the March 11th earthquake.

Oriental Land said on Friday that sales in the April-June period stood at around 620 million dollars, down 43 percent from a year ago.

The company had to close Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea for more than a month after quake-triggered liquefaction damaged parking areas and rolling blackouts restrained operations.

Oriental Land said the number of visitors fell significantly even after the 2 facilities reopened, causing both sales and profit to decline.

I was expecting a bigger loss, they were only open 2 months out of the quarter!

We were sent over there with the message that only we would defend Disney quality.. We learnt quickly that the Japanese culture speaks to a level of quality that is hard to comprehend. They were all unbelievably skilled and willing to do the right thing.

On my 3 full days spent on both Park. The first day is public holiday so wait time for most famous attractions are over 60 mins. The rest is lower than 15 mins for all attractions. I couldn't believe that I spent all attractions in TDL for just one day....

This is actually a VERY strong performance considering the number of days they were closed and the scope of the disaster.

Hang in there TDL, your audience will be back soon!

Yeah, this could easily have been much, much worse.

I think overall Tokyo Disney Resort can pat itself on the back for coming through one of the worst natural disasters on record with flying colors. It's hard to imagine it coming through this any better than it has.

There's no estimating what an "ideal" recovery from that tragedy should look like. Decreased profits were a given, but it's hard to know if the resort is better or worse off than can be expected quite yet. Obviously the Japanese economy will be recovering for some time and this will affect TDLR. Ideally we see these decreased profits slowly drift back towards their pre-earthquake numbers, probably over the course of a few years.

Re: Disney Resort operator posts biggest sales drop

I have to say that I am shocked to read that information because the experience we had at Tokyo Disney resort a few weeks ago was EXTRAORDINARY. If they are bleeding money, you would not know it, because the entire visit we had was near perfect and high quality. It has made our family more critical of Disney World's current conditions. We want to go back to Tokyo Disney!!!!

While I have not seen the whole financial report, it is lower sales. They are not bleeding money.
