  • Disney parks in Japan mark record 25.82 million visitors in 2006

Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea marked a record-high visitors in the fiscal 2006, the managing company reported Monday.

Nearly 26 million people visited the two theme parks in the year until March 31, up 1 million people, or 4.2 per cent, from the year before, Oriental Land Co said.

The number of visitors increased for the first time in three years, thanks to special shows presented at DisneySea to celebrate the park's fifth anniversary.

Tokyo Disneyland marked a record 25.5 million visitors in fiscal 2003 for the 20th anniversary of its opening.

I don't think anyone has said its a failing resort just that its numbers have been decreasing. Even OLC said that in a recent news report. They are looking into a possible third gate away from the resort and some changes to help stop the decline in attendance that has been happening for the last few years.

Notice the report on post one. The third sentence.

"The number of visitors increased for the first time in three years, thanks to special shows presented at DisneySea to celebrate the park's fifth anniversary."

they clearly say that this is the first increase in three years thanks to the anniversary.

They always expect an increase during anniversary celebrations. After the celebrations finished the parks went back to a decline. This again is normal but it needs to be controled with other promotions.

In the past TDS did not meet its agressive projections. things are looking better right now. Sometimes you can be out there making all kinds of money, blowing the other Disney parks away (25m for TDL is a huge nmumber compared to say 14 for DL) but be called a failure because you are not meeting the projections made by the investment community or the business plan of the park.

Actually, the 25 million figure for Tokyo Disneyland is including both parks. Tokyo Disneyland has never gotten more than 17 million visitors in the past. And ever since the opening of Tokyo DisneySea, the attendance of Tokyo Disneyland has dropped down to about 13-14 million.

Oh yes.... our friends from "Tales" magazine, who think DCA is better than TDS. But who cares what they think??
I just thought it was nice of OLC to allow WDW to believe it was *them* who had the highest attendance of any Disney Resort on earth for the past two years or so..

              GO TDR GO!!!!

Exactly. Anybody who says that California Adventure is a better park than Tokyo DisneySea loses their respect from me. It's just such a ridiculous statement!

The problem with TDR's visitor numbers though, are that what, 99% of them are all from one place - Japan. WDW attracts more visitors from all over the world. Brits regularly pass up a stay at DLPR to go to WDW and say it's a better deal and they enjoy it more. Other Europeans do the same thing. TDR's statistics for being "the most visited Disney Resort in the world" are about as meaningful as saying "More people speak Chinese than any other language in the world." Technically true, but the fact that they are all in one place takes a lot of wind out of it.

Except that most of these visitors to Japan's parks pay full ticket price, do you know how expensive an Annual pass is? It's not an AP lounge like Anaheim.

Who cares if almost everyone visiting TDL and TDS are Japanese. I don't even know what you're arguing. By the way 99% of the people who visited Disneyland during its first year were probably AMERICANS. So what.

^logic. Unless you are a Disney Geek like ourselves, most people don't know about DisneySea or the Tokyo park itself. The closest most have ever gotten to an advertisement for that part of the world are Travel Channel specials.

Everything else is in the states is "Come to Florida!" or "Come to California!" depending on what side of the country to live in. You don't really see "Come see Paris!" or "Come visit Hong Kong" in the context of a Disney theme park ad in our neck of the woods so much as you see a "Come get a taste of Italy at this local resturant" ad.

I always wondered why they don't advertise the foreign parks in the US...why is that?

Because Disney fully owns the US parks, and is either just a partial owner or an licensee for the foreign parks. They can make more money with folks in the US staying in the US.

A few years ago, a Disney exec in Japan told me, "OLC is not allowed to promote or market Tokyo Disney Resort outside of Asia. Disney has especially limited much coverage in North America and Europe." Now, that there is another Disney Park in Asia, OLC's hands are even more tied, with respect to promoting the Parks outside Japan.
