  • [Question] Why didn't Walt Disney World get the Harry Potter Attraction and IOA did?

Why didn't Walt Disney World get the Harry Potter themed land? Was it because of cost or was Universal more aggressive in getting it? Or it didn't fit into Walt Disney World's theme? Didn't ABC and Disney channel play Harry Potter movies if so why did it go to Universal Studios Florida and not Disneyworld?

It wouldn't be the cost to build it. More about the payment to JKR. More about the control of content, too, as JKR is a bit of a stickler, and Disney might have had other ideas.

The movie-on-TV deal is a separate transaction.

JK Rowling was very very specific on how she wanted the land built, Disney felt that many of her ideas wouldn't work well as far as theme park flow goes. They were trying to work through when universal basically said they'd give her whatever she asked for.

That's pretty much common knowledge these days.

Could it be that WDW did not get Harry Potty because that is not a Disney franchise?

Well Harry Potter isn't a Universal franchise either. Both Disney and Universal were fighting for the rights of HP.

Disney still shows the HP films on several of its television stations (Disney Channel, ABC Family, and ABC are the 3 that immediately jump to mind). Television, Theme Park, Music, Character, and general Movie rights are all different beings that cost different amounts.

For the same reason Disney opted not to make the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings movies but went for buying the Power Rangers franchise and thought creating the Chronicles of Narnia franchise would make up for their blunder

Eh, I'm an obsessive Harry Potter fan (though not of the movies. pitoooie!) but I think that this HP land at Universal will do well for a bit but then people will slowly lose interest.
The books are fantastic, but how long do you really think people will go out of their way to visit a land based on them?
Right now we're at the height (sorta) of Harry Potter interest and it's slowly fading. There is only one more book planned (for now *crosses fingers*) which is an encyclopedia, and only three more movies to go (and the last two will most likely be released six months apart.) The franchise only has two to three years left. Already new things are moving into HP's spot. How long will it be until the theme park rights to the Twilight series will be sold?

As sad as I find it to admit, it's a fad.

Though I think they will definitely make their money back, I don't see too much in the long-term.

As much as I don't really care about HP, to me this could very much be the children of this past decades Star Wars.

Hopefully never... That series needs to go die in a fire...

Or American Idol for that matter.

Jay Rasulo thinks that a brand is all that matters (not that he understands how to build one). He'd rather pay a small price tag for a brand like American Idol than a large price tag for a brand like Harry Potter. He has no understanding that one works better in a theme park environment than another...because he has no love for, or interest in, theme parks. In his Strat Planning days he was very open about that.

He lobbied against Indiana Jones Adventure and Splash Mountain when he was a strat planner. He has NEVER been in favor of large investments in the parks (only DVC and Cruise Line). If he can't charge a specific price for something, he doesn't like paying for it. Enhancing existing parks does not really fit with his way of thinking. Everest was approved by Eisner and Staggs while he was still in Paris. The only big ticket park improvement he has ever approved was for DCA, and that was done for political reasons. He saw the new CEO Iger (at the time) wanted it, so he went with the flow.
