  • [Question] carousel of progress question

Did they change the music or is it still "great big beautiful tomorrow"? And what about the scenes? Are they more futureistic? Are they going to remove the atraction anytime soon? I was just wondering

    Re: carousel of progress question

The Sherman Brother's song "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" was returned to the Carousel of Progress in 1994 when it became Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress. When it was moved to the Magic Kingdom the Sherman's worte a new song "Now is the Time" to promote GE's new focus on buying "Today" instead of waiting for tomorrow. Only the final scene has changed over the years from the original - incorporating the entire family into the scene and over the time at WDW has spotlighted the 70's, 80's, and the 90/00's... however the current show creates a 60 year jump and leaves a huge gap in the transition - which started as 20 year incraments

The music also changed slightly to incorporate the new narrator in 1994, Jean Shepard. Also, I think the instrumentals are more in tune to the decade depicted in the scenes than in the previous version, in my opinion. finally, the scenes have also been altered as each one is set during a holiday: Valentines Day, Fourth of July, Halloween, and Christmas.

As of now there are no plans to remove the CoP, but rumors have circulated often about its imminent closure. It was seasonal for a while, but when Alien Encounter went down to make room for Stitch's Great Escape, the CoP opened full time and has been going strong ever since.

I see an upgrade coming for CoP, new scenes, audio, new "future". But if it goes away forever then so be it. I'll miss it but will look forward to whatever replaces it.

MK doesnt have the right amount of space to really keep the show going. a 60 year gap is way too big.

The only way to really close the gap is to have the final scene set up like all the others... turn-tables flanking a set stage. the only difference is that the turntables would represent different decades.

the central stage would be 2020 - very Nova Cite from Epcot's Horizons
and the turn-tables would be vignettes of 1960's,1970's, 1980's, 2000's

I hope I get a chance to see it before I die. My mom loved it as a kid, and it's a piece of disney history. Do you think they'll ever return it to Disneyland?

              Re: carousel of progress question

Judging by 3rd shift work to fix up acts 1-3 (new fur for rover, cleaned and new props) and the outside (new posters, new TVs, new paint), plus increased attendance due to SM begin closed I don't expect it to leave WDW any time soon.

Act 4 however, has remained untouched since 1993 and is old, stale looking and dated. There are rumors for a new version of that scene and I hope it's next in line for a major refurb after SM. The other scenes however, are likely to remain the same in their current form knowing the work already done on them already.

They could always replace it wit America Sings.

If you want a great flashback. Disney recently released the CD box set, "Walt Disney and the 1964 World's Fair." It has all the original New York World's Fiar tracks from CoP, IASW, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and Ford's Magic Skyway. It's a fantastic collection.

The one replacement I wouldn't mind.

I only got to see America Sings once. It was a very nice show. I would not mind seeing the old and tired COP be transformed into America Sings once more, but I know I am in the minority here.

PLus me personally? I prefer "Now is the time" over the original song. The Sherman Bros are so overrated.

Yes, I do.. and many others.. but note I said I prefer "Now.." over the other one. I did not say, I "like it better".

                              And I quote again:

This is where my interpretation of that post comes from. With this statement in there, it comes across, to me, that you thought "Now is the Time" (which I also greatly enjoy) was composed by another (better) artist, and that people thought too highly of the Sherman Brothers' song.

Unless, of course, you meant you think the original song is overrated, then that I can understand (but disagree with).

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out some... inconsistencies.

And to the OP: sorry for the :ot:
