Hi, this is just for fun. I'm not a Harry Potter fan in ANY way, I hate it but the new details released today by Universal look promising and fun:

Harry Potter Theme Park Revealed - Photo Gallery on Yahoo! Movies

I just wanted to know what you people think about this land? To what degree do you suppose this will affect WDW? The media is going crazy on this so-called 'theme park within a theme park'. I'm not saying Universal will ever overtake WDW in any way with attendance but HP land sounds better than the fantasyland extension.

Lots of people have already make plans to go to Florida, specifically for HP. And with HP as the main reason for the trip, more of them are seriously considering making USF, as their homebase for this trip, rather than WDW. Depending upon reviews by the fans, during the 1st month or two, will determine whether USF will keep the crowds coming, and that is when we will see if that is siphoning off some of the crowds from WDW.

The economy will also be a factor, as to how many people will be visiting from out of state. And without anything new at WDW, Universal is "holding the better hand" this year. Overall, USF is definitely going to see a better year. WDW, well, it's likely going downhill, how much is the question. And the updated Fantastyland they are planning for the future just won't be enough, when it opens, as they are just WAY too late with a Fantasyland update, and the scope of that project just isn't enough to compete with what USF is offering with HP.

Overall, I think the HP area/attraction will be good for Disney fans. Competition like this is exactly what Disney needs to end its complacency in building new and innovative attractions. Honestly, I hope the HP area does have a negative effect on park attendance in the short run. It should tell Disney that guests are requiring the highest quality experiences - not glorified meet and greets, broken Yetis, and twice-failed Journeys into Imaginations.

        Well Said!

I am glad that they are working on Fantasyland but there are a good number of other areas around the WDW which also needs attention.

I think there is no way the new Fantasyland expansion will avail against Potterland. Potter attracts both genders. Princess junk just appeals to girls.

For my part, the next trip I take to Florida will be based around Potterland. I'm a little bit too disgusted with Disney in general right now to give it any more of my time and money.

I know that I have been putting off a return to Disneyworld until the Harry Potter section of IOA is open. I imagine others are doing the same. It will probably bring more people to Orlando and I imagine most will visit both resorts.

Overall that will help WDW. Also if it makes expand and improve, that would be great.

It may no benefit TDO for now, but I'm sure i will in the long run as it makes Orlando more and more popular- every park will benefit.

There is reason to doubt that it will help WDW. WDW wants to hold their guests "hostage" in WDW. And with HP over at Universal, that ain't likely to happen, and visitors will be planning to spend more time and days at USF, rather than WDW.

This may get me shot but I am not that impressed by HP land. Heck the train isn't even real. Its a fake train and just blah. Yes it will hurt Disney but this is good. Maybe they will get off their butts and work on Disney world.

You should see some of the details from the new major attraction in the HP land. It utilizes a LOT of new techonlogy, beautiful theming and just sounds very promising. You can check out the details in some videos online, although pictures are hard to come by at the moment. I'll try and find the video I saw earlier and post it so everyone can see!

Edit: Not the video I was looking for, but check out at about 30 seconds into this film for some of the actual scenes from the ride/queue -

Looks pretty cool to me, but I'm also wondering if part of this ride will be in a Soarin'/Imax style. The clip shows some new film-footage, so I'm guessing there will be a film section. This would explain how the ride would give the sense of being outdoors in the Quidditch scene.

Wizarding is going to be huge for Orlando in general. I am going to Orlando this summer specifically for HP. I am also going to check out WDW as well just while I am there.

I completely agree with this. I just hope if Potterville succeeds, Disney interprets it as a demand for higher quality attractions and themeing and not the need to find or purchase a new franchise to "synergize" into the parks.

Personally though, I'm not a Potter fan, so going to Honeydukes and the other Potterverse stores doesn't really interest me. Since everything except for the new dark ride is just a retheme of things that I've already been on, it better be one heck of a dark ride. On a sad note I will miss the queue for Dueling Daragons. That was really pretty.
It bothers me when people selectively edit quotes to support whatever point they are trying to prove.

Viking, how can you be unimpressed by something you haven't seen and experienced yet? Yeah, I'm not impressed by the upcoming Tron movie. Mind you, it's not even out yet, but that won't stop me from forming an opinion already...

Back to the OP's question: I think Potter will prompt some people to spend an extra day or two at Universal. Considering it has only one new ride, I kind of doubt many people will spend a week at Universal instead of their usual 2-3 days. And most people who come for Potter will also go to Disney. I've argued before that Disney and Universal have more of a symbiotic relationship than a competitive one, and this is a perfect example.

Universal Studios Orlando unveiled photos and concept art for "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter." That's right, a whole theme park based around the Hogwarts and all the other cool places described in J.K. Rowling's books.

I think it could be positive, but if too many people decide to add on a trip to Walt Disney World it could be bad. Extra attendance could encourage Disney to rest on its laurels.

It is not Yahoo! who is to blame, the "theme park within a theme park" line comes from Universal Orlando. It may very well prove to be Universal's undoing in all of this if people come expecting a day's worth of activities only to find an Island.
