  • [Question] Hotel Question

I'm very excited that we are coming in January or February. My daughter will be competing in a gymnastics competition at WDW. I grew up in Florida and hit WDW twice a year. I have since moved to SoCal and now have my Disneyland passes and go very often to the Disneyland parks.

The last time we were at WDW was in 2007, and we stayed at the Fort Wilderness Resort. We really liked that hotel. We want to stay in one of the deluxe hotels. I was wondering if anyone knew which ones had been most recently renovated.

Does anyone know? We are considering the Fort Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Polynesian, and maybe Beach Club/Yacht Club. Any thought on these? Any warnings about conditions or accolades?

polynesian will probably be done construction by the time you are there so that would be the most recently updated resort but I don't think room renovations are part of that plan. the best option out of the list you laid out IMO bar none in the beach club. it has without a doubt the premier location of any resort with a 5 minute or less walk to epcot, boat service or walking trails to hollywood studios, access to the monorails through epcot and completely inclusive bus service for the whole resort. its also a 5-10 minute walk from the boardwalk which is a nice free entry additional entertainment area to enjoy as well as the best pool hands down of any resort. finally it has many of disney worlds best dining establishments within walking distance including the world showcase, the boardwalk area, and the yacht and beach club's own restaurants including arguably the best steak (yachtsman's steakhouse) the cape may cafe which offers a great clam bake buffet with all you can eat crab legs that transitions to one of the few in resort character breakfast buffets, and the best ice cream on property (beaches and cream) which also has some deceivingly incredible food options. the tomato bisque and seven cheese sandwhich may have been one of my favourite entres of the whole trip, who would have known. if you can swing it stay at this resort, the others all are solid choices but cant stand up IMO to the supreme beach club.

some notes about the others: AK lodge is beautiful (basically an african, updated and slightly larger version of the wilderness lodge with a savannah in the back) and has some incredible upscale dining options (Boma, Jiko) but it is also very very isolated. staying here means you concede to many a long bus ride as the only thing close to it is the animal kingdom theme park. fort wilderness again also a great choice but A you said you've done it already so might be nice to try something new and B it has the smallest rooms of any deluxe and instead of the much faster monorail you have to deal with the nice but much slower boat travel to the magic kingdom. as for the polynesian I would probably make it my second choice after beach because it has many similar features and also has the monorail which is a big plus, however i'm not entirely sure when construction will be completed there for the DVC add and main building work so thats another factor that needs to be considered.
let me know i you have other questions

      Re: Hotel Question

The Poly got a room update, about 1-2 years ago. Now it's getting a lobby update and DVC expansion. I have little doubt that it will be done for your visit.

Port Orleans resorts and now the Caribbean Beach Resort both moderate resorts have the newest rooms. Last year and this year updates.

I would do the Yatch/Beach Club for reason laid out above.

The AKL and WL have cheaper rates, but as you can see they have some trade offs.

You may want to upgrade to a Premier AP for this trip.

Thanks for the great advice. I am going to take a closer look at the Beach Club. I've always heard wonderful things about it.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Poly being done by January. All the permits for the project have expiration dates of April 30, 2015. So it may be close by January, but there could still be work going on.

I would expect all of the stuff they are currently doing to be finished up at least though and the main lobby to be completed before the christmas rush as they can't have that place cluttered at the busiest time of the year, however other stuff they haven't started yet could very likely be incomplete.

Bay Lake tower is pretty new, but the amazing views make it great. Poly will be almost completed when you stay, but the lobby should be fully completed with only the rooms left. Beach/yacht is really great in the sense that you are right next to Epcot and DHS, and the boardwalk. AKL is really nice, but it is a pain to get anywhere other than DAK. Ft Wilderness is good in the sense that you can take a boat to MK and walk to the TTC to go to EPCOT, but you have already stayed here. Grand Floridian is always nice as well. If you get park to park passes and want to go to the World Showcase at night, stay at Beach/yacht. If you are going to go to one park a day, stay at Bay Lake Tower, Poly, or Grand Floridian as they are on the monorail.
