Mickey arm, wand coming down from Spaceship sphere

The 257-foot-tall Mickey Mouse arm, glove and wand logo structure at Epcot is coming down.

Epcot Vice President Jim MacPhee announced this morning that the time has come to remove the structure, which has served both as a colorful, lighted Epcot sign since 2000, and as a lightning rod for criticism from Epcot purists who contended the image was out of character for Epcot's architecture.

The structure leans on Epcot's previous and future iconic figure, the Spaceship Earth Pavilion, a180-foot geodesic sphere that can be seen for miles.

The arm and glove went up for Walt Disney World's 2000 millennium celebration.

Now, however, with but with Epcot's 25th anniversary this fall, and the temporary closing of Spaceship Earth ride, MacPhee said, "We think the timing of the removal is right."

Deconstruction of the 50-ton structure begins Monday, and will be completed shortly before the park's 25th anniversary, October 1. Also coming down are the 36-foot-high "Epcot" letters and colored stars splashing across the sphere.

Also Monday, the Spaceship Earth ride will close to complete a refurbishing sponsored by Siemans AG. The work should be done by November, MacPhee said

They even mention the 25th anniversary in the same article, and for part of the reason for taking the wand down? Are we sure this isn't an April Fools' Joke? :ap:

I didn't know it was that big. 50 tons! Who knew it would take that long to take down as well. I will be there October 4th. My first view of the sphere without the wand!

Very nice, I'm also optimistic that we may get something for the anniversary with Jim Machpee as the VP since it was mentioned as part of the reason for it coming down. Maybe Macphee is just the man we need to get Epcot back to EPCOT Center.

            Deconstruction begins on Monday!!

            - Wheels heard screeching by the TTC as WDW Monorail goes full throttle on the Epcot beam toward SSE. -

Just to let you know, permits have yet to be filed.

3 months seems such a long time for getting that structure removed.
So much for capturing the traditional SE family picture moment during our July/August vacation this time around. Think we'll see the wand on Ebay this fall?
So goodbye 'Leave a Legacy', goodbye 'Epcot wand' - I'd be perfectly happy if they leave well enough alone and keep the area simple and clutter free.

                  Monday?

I hope so- just to have the opportunity to perform an expressive dance at the base when the first bolts are removed.

                    It's about Frickin' time!

So EPCOT does something to mark their 25th anniversary but WDW as a whole did nothing for their 30th or 35th? To be fair WDW's 30th was right after 9/11 so I don't blame them at all for letting that pass without any fanfare.

The term "deconstruction" was first coined by a politician in reference to the US Embassy in Moscow during the Cold War, which had been bugged so badly they had to take the building apart a piece at a time. Somewhere there's a metaphor in here. Perhaps it's the "bugging" term. Certainly that applies to the wand!

Or do we have to wait for the Studios' 25th anniversary?

At least just move it. There is a nice plot of land right to the right of the security check where it will fit right in. Just take it off Hollywood Boulevard please!
