  • Now Showing - "O Canada"

Well today was the day to catch the brand new film in the Canada Pavillion, and I was able to make it to the first "official" showing. (It actually opened yesterday afternoon, bah soft openings!) Anyhoo, in general, I liked it.

Martin short is very funny, and I thought the opening scene was the funniest part. I'm not much for reviews, so I'll leave that to someone else. but the new shots look great, and even the old shots look good because of the new print. The 14 minutes really seems to fly by in a away it did not in the old film, the pacing is much faster throughout.

As for new film vs. Old film, one of the CMs there compiled a complete shot for shot list, and weather the film is old or new. I invited him to post it here, so hopefully it will show up on this thread. But most of them are obvious. As a sidenote though, a few of the "new" shots are actually old shots that were not used in the original.

As a piece of future trivia...there will be 2 changes to the film in the next week or so. First, during one part they show "famous faces from Canada." One of these faces is Pamela Anderson, which apparently someone thinks is not very Disney so her pic will be cut. Also, at the end, Marty casually points out of the theater, but he points toward the entrance, rather than to the exit, on the left. This piece will be flipped over so he points the right direction.

All in all, I think it's very good, I only worry that it may be a bit less relevant in 25 years, so lets hope the refurb schedule is a bit quicker next time.

I'm Curious to know what everyone else though of it.

    Also, :ot:
On my way out, I saw this.

I figure it's someone from here, and I wanna know who it is, why? Bercause you copied me!

    Grrrrrr! I'll get you!!

Seriously though, I'm curious, if it's you please speak up!

ORDDU: My sisters and I have not swooped down into Epcot lately--but we soon will. Are you saying that the new version of this film isn't really 'new' at all? If they're merely using old film footage from years ago that hadn't been seen until now, something is very wrong.

ORWEN: I thought they were going to have a whole new film of Canada with the same pretty song that was re-recorded by new artists. Guess we'll have to see for ourselves exactly what they did but, by what you just said, naumoney, duckling, the whole thing doesn't sound anything like what we were told it would be.

I think I made it sound worse than it is, there are only two "new but old" shots, and they are both relativity unimportant, it's a shot of an old lady curling, and a different shot of kids playing hockey.
There is new circlevision footage, there are new shots of some of the cities, and some great shots of Niagara Falls. the old footage that they kept was alot of the wilderness shots that didn't need to be replaced, and as i said, they are hit much faster. For example, they kept the low-tide, high tide scene, but instead of having the 5 or so time lapse shots, theere is only 3 now, and Marty explains what it is exactly.

Saw the new movie today also, and will post more about it when I get my trip report up. Overall, I liked it a lot. I have not seen the old movie in many, many years, but I think this one has a great blend of humor and information about Canada. Actually, it makes me want to visit Canada, which I guess is really it's purpose. Martin Short is very good in the movie, especially the opening, and the title song, which is updated, really is good to hear still, yet it's also nice that they updated it from the 25 year old version that was so outdated.

I think this will be a regular stop in World Showcase for me from now on. I really enjoyed it.

ORDDU: My sisters and I NEVER felt that the original singers of the Canada song were 'out-dated'. It was as timeless, for us, as when Dorothy Gale sings 'Over the Rainbow'.

ORWEN: Just a difference in tastes, I guess. I hope this new version of the song isn't too 'hip an edgy' or it'll just ruin the whole experience for us. Why is it that so many modern singers, these days, end up screaming their songs--or just whining through them?

ORGOCH: Good question! Hurts my ears when these modern goomers goes 'n ruins a song by soundin' like they's a cryin' baby instead of bein' a REAL singer!!

I will try to persuade G-Fan to come down to EPCOT tonight and see the new movie.. if the jetlag permits.

I thought the song didn't sound too hip or whiny at all actually. In fact, I like this better than the newer version of Golden Dreams they introduced back when they updated that show. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but I do think that it really does keep the spirit of the original song very much, without making it seem too modernized to fit popular tastes.

Re: Now Showing - "O Canada"

Ok... G-Fan and I just got back from EPCOT Center a few moments ago, before the afternoon thunderstorms rolled in..
I happen to notice a lot of gay couples in the park as well... both men and women. Did I miss some kind of Family event at Disney today?

Anyways... I thought the film was very cute. It moved at a conciderable pace. Had the necesary mix of cheese to keep today's type of audiences interested for the time being. Martin Short, though not a spring chicken anymore, does keep things lively. The new scenes are crisp clear, and while there is a noticeable change in picture quality when the old scenes are edited in... the movie does look great. The flying panoramas of Canadien cities are exciting. The polar bears are awshucks cute. The montage of famous canadien artists remind us how much prettier their men are over our american leading males. And while Short's "this is the perfect time for a song" line is pure velveeta (as is the Zeus-like narrator getting ticked off and leaving the room) I thought it was necesary to keep the spirit of a wacky tour of our northern neighbors frontiers. The only portion of the movie I had trouble with.. was the used of the same image in all 9 screens, and there a few too many of those moments in the new movie. Like...hello? this is a "circle-vision" movie. Not a 9-screen multiplex playing the newest release in every auditorium.
All in all, TDLFAN rates it a 3 and a half stars out of 5. But I would have prefered to see Short come to MGM (Oooops! DHS) in his own attraction from Paris, "Cinemagique".

Thanks for the reviews and descriptions everyone! I was wearing a Roots t-shirt at DLR earlier today, so I was channeling my inner-Canadian. Or something like that. LOL! I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie on my next trip...which unfortunately won't be until 2008. That's okay, I have some patience.

Re: Now Showing - "O Canada"

Ricky Brigante from Inside the Magic has the entire film available to download, and I was really impressed with it. I am in Canada (primarily Ontario) a lot, and I really enjoy the country and its citizens - I think this movie definitely does them justice.

I have to laugh at the Niagara Falls (Horseshoe Falls) scene. After showing the wide expanse and beauty of the falls the shot stays on.......a casino. Oh well, I guess Canadians (and Western New Yorkers) are the only ones who know it's not some museum of Canadian history or something important (makes me think the crew thought it was some kind of Niag. Falls version of the CN Tower or something).

Anyway, love the new video

I've heard many good things about this show, so I'd love to see it come to the Studios as well. Put that in the old ABC theatre or the Sounds Dangerous theatre (Drew Carey needs to be evicted).

Evicted is right, especially since the Price is Right on CBS just offered him bigger money than Disney will ever give.
