  • Martin Mars water bomber (flying boat) in northern California

I see one of our Martin Mars water bombers from BC is at Lake Shasta helping put out fires.
Here's a video clip and photos of Hawaii Mars landing and taxing on Lake Shasta:

It was the Hawaii Mars that was in San Diego last fall helping put out the fires there.

I miss the Martin Mars water bombers. I grew up on Sproat Lake, approximately a 5 minute drive from their base. They would always fly low over my parents house when they would come in for a landing on the lake. I've been inside them a few times. They're great planes. Wish I could go for a ride.

Such an awesome piece of equipment. I didn't know these aircraft existed until I saw them last year with all the fires. Very cool.

The only flying boat that's bigger was the Spruce Goose. The Hawaii and the Philippine are the last two left of their kind.

I was just reading on another board that Hawaii Mars is still down in California fighting fires. Philippine is back home at the base on Sproat Lake and actually, they have the plane out of the water on the tarmac. If anyone here does a trip over to Vancouver Island and is heading out to the Pacific Rim National Park, it's a good opportunity to see the plane up close.
