  • How hard is it to blow up a building?

Some amusing news from my neck of the woods. It needs a bit of back story to truely appreciate how funny it is. There is a large grain tower in downtown Sioux Falls called the Zip feed tower- at one point in time, it was the tallest building in South Dakota. The city decided to demolish the building to continue with downtown expansion. Most cities would just knock it down quietly, but no, not Sioux Falls. The city decided to use it as a fundraiser. There were billboards up all over town proclaiming "BOOM!" to advertise the demolition. The city sold "prime viewing" tickets for $5 a piece which included a dust mask and held a catered party after the event. The Argus Leader termed it "the social event of the season". The event was televised live by local stations, and they even raffled off the chance to puch the button that exploded the charges.

Here is the fruit of all that hoopla:

The building failed to collapse. Now they have to take a good old fashioned wrecking ball to tear it down.

Here is the Argus Leader's coverage of the story:

    And my favorite quote:
"Typical Sioux Falls - trying to do something in big-city fashion and then doing it only halfway." Totally true of this city!

This news story had me rolling, its so perfectly ironic.

      Oooooooooooh! Aaaaaaaaaaah!
      Huh?

I wonder who is paying for the wrecking ball: The City or the demolition company?

The demolition company it taking care of the rest of it- I imagine they are paying for it since they screwed it up.

Its now become a bigger tourist trap than ever- I'm thinking about going down there and taking a picture in front of it for our Christmas cards

NPR's version of the story had a sound bite of the Boom, then a pregnant pause, followed by a young boy saying "Dad, I don't think it worked!". Priceless.

Years ago, the El Centro CA City Hall was heavily damaged in an earthquake. The decided to implode it and when the big day came, the top three floors just collapsed onto of the botom floor. Needles to say, the had to tear it down the old gasshioned way.

This was freaking hilarious! There is video of it at this site: http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

We had a good laugh over it.

What a bunch of F-ups!!!!!!!!! I mean, any guy could get that job done, just based on genetics, I don't see how these people screwed it up? Watching that video is like watching a monkey try and F a football.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Very funny! Reminds me of a story in Hallendale, FL (next to Ft. Lauderdale). They were building a draw bridge, took over 2 years to complete, and on the opening day (no pun intended), the 2 halves didn't meet. They were off by over 2 feet! You would think this would have been tested, but no.

I think some stress tests have to be made in order to implode a building. Lots of steel cutting in specific points to make the place drop in a balanced way.
Can't just put some explosives in a building and expect it to fall. First WTC attempt tried that. Even Oklahoma City bombing only sheared off a side.
