story and video of the carnage can be seen at http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/09/05/foo....ap/index.html

Football coach runs onto field, decks opposing player

STOCKTON, California (AP) -- An assistant youth football coach was arrested on charges of felony child abuse after rushing the field and knocking an opposing player to the ground, police said.

Cory Petero, 36, of Riverbank, turned himself in to Stockton police Saturday night following a late hit that turned into a brawl, with parents and children from both teams fighting on the field.

The incident was recorded on videotape. (Watch coach plow down opposing team player -- 1:35)

Referee Tim Winek said he had just called a penalty on Brian Wood, 13, a Stockton Bears player.

"There was a penalty on the play, and it was a late hit," Winek said. "The parent of the kid who got hit took exception to it. He came charging out onto the field."

Daniel Champion, who identified himself as Wood's father, told The (Stockton) Record that his son suffered bruises on his stomach and jaw from the assault.

The brawl erupted about 3:30 p.m. with less than a minute left to play between the Riveroak Redskins and the Bears.

Fighting continued for about 20 minutes, according to witnesses. No major injuries were reported.

    Police are investigating.

That's sad to see what the world has become.

Hehe, in Canada there's a problem with hockey dads. They get so into the their kids team that they'll often fight with other dads in the stands. My social studies teacher would often do this, he was the epitomy of the "sports dad". He would drive his kid the whole the 3 hours up to Edmonton so he could be on a better hockey team up there, 3 times a week! He also told us a bunch of stories of getting in fights with other hockey dads.

You want to know how far parents will go? Read the book: "Little Girls In Pretty Boxes: The Making and Breaking of Elite Gymnasts and Figure Skaters"

Even the coaches get into the action, with berating and belittling and name-calling, etc.

I see this all the time at the ice rink I work at. Sometimes I just want to walk up and slug these parents. They're very expensive sports, and its sad to see that the money is so important to these parents.

I used to play little league baseball, and after one season I was done. It was such garbage. It was ALLLLL about the politics of the sport with the parents, and that was 13 years ago! I can only imagine how brutal it is now. Obviously it's gone too far, just let the kids play and have fun!

People seem to totally forget.... ITS SUSPOSE TO BE FUN FOR THE KIDS!!!!

Its not the end of the world if they don't win. The sun will still come up tomorrow if their team is in last place. Life is short enough as it is, and the world is already filled with people who take it way to serious. And we wonder why by the time kids get to jr. high that they have borderline high blood pressure and need prozac!!!
