  • Congrats to YOU! for being named Time Magazine Person of the year for 2006

    http://apnews.myway.com/article/20061217/D8M2ACFO1.html

Congratulations! You are the Time magazine "Person of the Year."

The annual honor for 2006 went to each and every one of us, as Time cited the shift from institutions to individuals - citizens of the new digital democracy, as the magazine put it. The winners this year were anyone using or creating content on the World Wide Web.

"If you choose an individual, you have to justify how that person affected millions of people," said Richard Stengel, who took over as Time's managing editor earlier this year. "But if you choose millions of people, you don't have to justify it to anyone."

The magazine did cite 26 "People Who Mattered," from North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il to Pope Benedict XVI to the troika of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

And Stengel said if the magazine had decided to go with an individual, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the likely choice. "It just felt to me a little off selecting him," Stengel said.

The 2006 "Person of the Year" package hits newsstands Monday. The cover shows a white keyboard with a mirror for a computer screen where buyers can see their reflection.

It was not the first time the magazine went away from naming an actual person for its "Person of the Year." In 1966, the 25-and-under generation was cited; in 1975, American women were named; and in 1982, the computer was chosen.
"I always love it when it's a person - and it is a person, not a computer or something like that," Stengel said. "We just felt there wasn't a single person who embodied this phenomenon."

A.K.A. 2006, the year where everyone sucked so bad that Time Magazine didn't feel right giving out an award.

I would like to accept this award in the name of deadline-driven magazine editors everywhere.

      Thank you.

Time's latest pronouncement means we all share an honor with Adolf Hitler, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Ted Turner, and the American Women...among others.

I'm ready for my closeup now, Mr. DeMille.

              Seriously, how lame is this.

Agreed. Oh by the way, I'm assuming this includes all the identity thieves, child porn site purveyors, "phishers", "pharmers", hackers and virus creators too?

And to think that Time Magazine was actually relevant at one time.

I would like to sincerely thank Time Magazine for this honor. This news comes at a difficult time in my life and is a light of hope and renewal during dark hours. My uncle was the Vice President of Slobovia. He was recently killed in an auto accident. Before his untimely death, he was in charge of a $150 million infrastructure renewal project. These funds are now held in a Swiss bank account. I am looking for a business partner to help me move these funds...

(Disclaimer for overly enthusiastic lawyers and/or governmental investigators):This internet posting is a lie, a parody and a satire. No FBI investigation is necessary. The above offer is not real and I do not want a response. Any fool stupid enough to actually believe the above lies and who actually responds will be ignored. Slobovia is not a real country. I am not actually related to anyone in the government of this fictional country. There is no $150 million bank account.

Now this is when awards become completely pointless.

Wow. This is almost as bad as when GQ named Jennifer Anniston Man of the Year.

Before all you cynics dismiss Time's selection, I suggest you read the actual article from the magazine:

                        http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...569514,00.html

The "Great Man" theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men." He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year.

To be sure, there are individuals we could blame for the many painful and disturbing things that happened in 2006. The conflict in Iraq only got bloodier and more entrenched. A vicious skirmish erupted between Israel and Lebanon. A war dragged on in Sudan. A tin-pot dictator in North Korea got the Bomb, and the President of Iran wants to go nuclear too. Meanwhile nobody fixed global warming, and Sony didn't make enough PlayStation3s.

But look at 2006 through a different lens and you'll see another story, one that isn't about conflict or great men. It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.
Apply that last paragraph to just our little community here on MC. Tell me what it says isn't true.

Bravo Time Magazine for an insightful and relevant choice.

This has to be one of the most pathetic things I have seen in a while. There where many who where deserving of the honor this was just a sad cop out to avoid any real though being made.
