Oh wow...my mothers mother died when my mother was 9....

      Mine would be:
      1. Having my son...it changed everything.
      2. Picking up a camera and taking a chance on that one good shot
      3. My mother telling me (just last night) that she supports my photography endeavours.
      4. Losing my best friend to cancer in January 2006...I was and still am, devastated.

          3) Moving to CA.
          Good morning, son
          In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
          It was pain
          Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

                1. Getting married
                2. The death of my Grandpa Rex in 2000
                3. The death of my Grandma Ginny in 2002
                4. The death of my Grandma Teresa in 2006
                5. The birth of my son in 2006 - making me realize that good did come out of that year.
                6. My diagnosis of cancer in 2006

The passings of my 3 grandparents made me realize the importance of them in my life. I knew they were important, so don't get me wrong. But as time wears on, I miss them.....wish to talk to them - and realize how they had their own defining moments in my life.

By the way - 2006 was a 'wild' year for me.

Re: What Are The Defining Moments In Your Life?

Aside from family moments, the most defining moment of my life came in an 8th grade spelling bee. I used to get nervous any time I had to speak about anything in front of a group. But in 7th grade, I made it to a regional spelling bee and got screwed. It was a word I'd never heard before, and the MC mispronounced it. Since I was doing my best to spell it phonetically, I had no chance.

The next year, I won a couple of bees and made it to the same regional bee and decided not to participate. The school had a hissy fit, and literally begged me to participate. I answered with "okay, I'll do it, but you can't make me care, and you can't make me study."

When the bee came, for the first time in my life, I stood up in front of a large crowd and didn't give a crap what happened. And for the first time, I wasn't nervous. It was almost like a real life version of Peter's hynotic state in Office Space. Despite not studying or preparing at all, I took second place in the region, which was better than any student from my school had ever done, and when I didn't win, I had no disappointment whatsoever.

From that moment on, I've had virtually no fear of failure, virtually no fear of embarrassment, and no fear of public speaking. I've done standup comedy, teaching, lecturing to large (and smart) crowds, singing, theater, jury trials (up to $13 million at stake) and it hardly fazes me at all.

It's very liberating to not fear public speaking. And to think it was all because I didn't give the south end of a northbound rat about a grade school spelling bee.

                    Hi Dland Daddy,

I was looking at your profile. We are 2 months apart in age. I was born in Anaheim and live in Corona now. Small world.

Mine is easy, its the day I graduated with Honors from the University of Utah. As a kid I suffered from learning disorders that were never diagnosed so I struggled throughout high school and was told that I shouldnt even try college. Well I did try and I proved to myself that anything is possible if you belive in yourself.

-When my cousin Eric was diagnosed with Tourettes and ADHD made me want to teach kids just like him, and I did.

-Getting pregnant for the first time and having the 1st of 3 gorgeous girls twelve years ago. Changed my life for the better. My life is what it is now (pretty damn cool) because of that child and her sisters!

-Choosing to stay married and falling in love with my husband all over again. We've been together for thirteen years now.

-When I convinced my grandpa to go see a doctor 8+ years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died soon after. Before I went to see him, he wouldn't go get diagnosed, he was just wasting away.

                              -September 11th.

-When my cousin Eric died last summer after being hit by a car. I'm still beyond devastated.

-When I woke up this winter and realized how freaking unhealthy I've been and have turned this life around. Again.
