  • But Walt Said...favorite quotes (merged)

I thought it might be nice to have a thread consisting of nothing but quotes from Uncle Walt. If you post, please site your quote if possible.
Now, to start off this thread, I only think it is appropiate to begin with what Walt said at opening day at Disneyland. This quote is also at the bottom of the flag pole on Main Street, in DL. Here goes...

To all who come to this place: Welcome.
    Disneyland is your land.
Here age relives fond memories of the past...
and here youth may savor the challenge and
    promise of the future.
"Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals,
the dreams and the hard facts which
    have created America...
with the hope that it will be a source
    of joy and inspiration to
    all the world."

    Walt Disney

Why be a Governor or Senator, when you can be King of Disneyland?"
1st Amendment-Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

"I don't like formal gardens. I like wild nature. It's the wilderness instinct in me, I guess."

From the book, Disneyland, The first quarter century.

          "That's what it's all about, isn't it."
Said to Richard Sherman after listening to "Feed The Birds."
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

"People sort of live in the dark about things. A lot of young people think the future is closed to them, that everything has been done. This is not so. There are still plenty of avenues to be explored."

Wow, Walt was one inspiring dude. His quote about keeping the family together is 100% true.

"Lillian used to say, 'But why do you want to build an amusement park? They're so dirty.' I told her that was just the point- mine wouldn't be."

"When things are going good, I'm afraid something's going to crack under me any minute. A kick in the pants can be the best thing in the world for you"

" I've got a lot of ideas. I haven't worked them out and I havn't proved them out. I carry ideas around in my head for a long time."

"All I know about money is that I have to have it to do things. I neither wish nor intend to amass a personal fortune. Money may worry me, but it does not excite me. Ideas excite me."

"When you're curious,m you find lots of interesting things to do. And one thing it takes to accomplish something is courage.

"All you have to do is own up to your ignorance honestly, and you will find people who are eager to fill your head with information"

" I happen to be an inquisitive guy, and when I see things I don't like, I start thinking, 'Why do they have to be like this and how can I improve them?"

" people who have worked with me say I am 'innocence in action.' They say I have the unselfconsciousness of a child. Maybe I have. I still look at the world with uncontaminated wonder, and with all living things I have a terrific sympathy. It was the most natural thing in the world for me to imagine that mice and squirrels might have feelings just like mine."

"If you can dream it, you can do it."

                  - All Walt Disney

All quotes were taken from the book "How to Be Like Walt" By Pat Williams.

                    Walt Disney on Disneyland:

"A word may be said in regard to the concept and conduct of Disneyland's operational tone. Although various sections will have the fun and flavor of a carnival or amusement park, there will be none of the 'pitches,' game wheels, sharp practices, and devices designed to milk the visitor's pocketbook."

"I don't want the public to see the world they live in while they're in Disneyland. I want them to feel they're in another world."

These quotes and many others can be found in "The Quotable Walt Disney" published by Disney Editions. Everyone who loves Disney should read it. Everyone who works for Disney should read it. I fear that some who have had a major impact on Disneyland and particularly Disney's California Adventure have not read it. I suspect that Mr. Ouimet has.
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

                      "I wanted something alive, something that could grow, something I could keep plussing with ideas;
                      the Park is that.
Not only can I add things but even the trees will keep growing.
The things will get more beautiful each year."

"Why do we have to grow up? I know more adults who have the children's approach to life. They're people who don't give a hang what the Joneses do. You see them at Disneyland every time you go there. They are not afraid to be delighted with simple pleasures, and they have a degree of contentment with what life has brought - sometimes it isn't much, either."
