I wonder if that's what the tiger wanted for Christmas?

What a nightmare! Since the site has been deemed a crime scene by law enforcement authorities, the zoo can expect a huge financial penalty from the state, in addition to a most probable lawsuit from the Sousa family. I wouldn't be surprised to see neglegent animal caretakers locked away in jail as well.

It will be interesting to read the OSHA report. I'm happy that other zoos are taking the fatality seriously enough to xamine the site on their own in order to better safeguard their respective facilities. One death in all zoo history in America is a pretty good track record. Still, their is more than one or two barriers in animal display areas that are in place to prevent things like this from happening. I suspect multiple breaches in security.

The lion house will be closed longer than 6 months in the wake of this bloody mangling.

I feel so sorry for the family, and for the negative PR consequences for the zoo - perhaps zoos everywhere.

A person really died. Making fun of a young man that was murdered in front of his family is pretty cold hearted. His grief sticken parents will live with the memory of this horror for the rest of their lives.

I remember the story about the orangatan that got out at the San Diego Zoo and was walking around with people.
That is such a horrible thing to happen, *hug* to the family.

However they may have been taunting the tiger...... I hope we fund out what happens.

I was just at that Zoo last month. It is amazing that people will stand there and roar and yell at the animals trying to get them to react. Usually they just sit there. Maybe this was one too many.

zoos depress me. I really don't enjoy going to them. People act like idiots and taunt the animals. It saddens me. also, the animals do not even look happy. The one exception was the wild animal park, but they have huge areas for the animals to roam in.

Hopefully they find out how the tiger got out and what mad it so angry.

Very good point, Pan. Peeple can be quite cruel to animals. Still. zoos are supposed to be designed to safely contain the animals - regardless of the arbitrary behavior of visitors. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to find out if the Sousa's are guilty of any misconduct such as taunting.

they feed them every second day, so you wouldn't think it would be due to hunger...
and didn't they find someone in the cafe with the tiger on them?? It's a long way from the enclosures

True. I have to admit that, before really thinking it through, I laughed at the headline that said "San Francisco 1, Tigers 1".Then I thought about it and found it no longer funny.

Once a story gets started....my brother in law interrupted us yesterday with news that three tigers had escaped the San Francisco Zoo and were prowling around the city. :bang:

I was glad to hear this wasn't the case, but was sorry to hear of that poor person who was killed. Condolences to that poor family.

I too am awaiting osh report , I just cannot believe that a tiger somehow got thru those bars,or over them to attack a visitor. It is a crime scence area since they are looking to see if someone helped the tiger out. If that is the case that person is responsible for the death of a person, the tiger and for taking away a comforting thought that you can go to a zoo and enjoy the animals. We are in an age that is animal friendly, no fur coats, habitant friendly, natural setting and diet, I find it very incomprehensible that this tiger just "escaped". I feel so sorry for the family. Every little kid goes "roar" to the tigers and lions and I am sure that zoos are well aware of this and the exhibits are designed for safety of both the animals and patrons.

There's gotta be security cameras SOMEWHERE right? From all the reports I've been reading and how this same zoo had another problem with the same tiger where the court ruled that the ZOO was at fault, I'm starting to think this is a shady operation here.

Huge bummer for all the victims and their families. It really sucks for something like this to happen. But I smell foul play. It just doesn't make sense. Unless tiger powers were underestimated.

Not called for in this case. It wasn't the guest being negligent or a pre-existing condition. Somebody got mauled by a Tiger ... on Christmas.

Even if they were, I still don't think that's an excuse to die and I don't think the Tiger could have gotten out without some help.

Again, taunting an animal does not equal needing to get mauled by one.

I'm VERY upset about the Tigers fate. It's not his fault what his natural instinct is. And if it turns out somebody let the Tiger out, they should be charged with Murder for the person AND the Tiger.
