  • Should the "Redskins" and other Native American mascots be retired?

    Hail to the Redtails?

If a newly elected District of Columbia councilman has his way, that's what Washington football fans might be singing once the Redskins change their name from a term he and many others consider offensive to Native Americans

Absolutely not! What's wrong with people that have this wimpy outlook on life, where everything is supposed to be so politically correct? We would have a complete cultural washout of insignificant blandness if it were up to them.

As a Native American Chickasaw member of the Five Civilized Tribes, I am honored that different sports teams have chosen Native American/Indian related names. Next thing you know, a group will pop up and demand that the words cowboy and cowgirl both be changed to an adrogenous "cowperson". Then, another group might crop up claiming to represent cows, and relate that cows resent being connected to people, and the "cowpersons" would simply become "spur-persons", or something on that order.

If the Redskin and other Native American mascots are removed, do you think the new redskin potato mascot suit might be spudly enough to be popular? I'm thinking about designing one?

Interesting. I was led to believe that the majority of Native Americans were offended by these mascots.

I don't know if it's the same but I'm Scandinavian, and totally not offended that our team is the Vikings. I do find the latest team names to be insipid and boring- the "Wild"? Really? Or they're all named after animals. Whatever.

No of course not. What will happen to the Atlanta Braves or the Cleveland Indians? or The Chicago Blackhawks? Will they change those names too? I think it is dumb

Well, yeah, there's a movement to rename all those teams.

There's a difference between small outspoken groups that push to PC the nation, and the actual majority of Americans....or the actual majority of Native Americans in this case. The majority have not been petitioned for an opinion, but I would imagine that the majority do not care one way or the other, and that the majority of Native American sports fans like the Native American/Indian names. There's fewer pure bloods every year, and it makes no sense to reduce references to the NA/I culture; along with it through boring and inane PCing.

Right on! I'm sure there's a few Viking decendants out there, though, whom would love to sink the "Viking ship"....and culture right along with it.

They would receive names so lame that they wouldn't offend anyone that loves lame things. Here's a few PC possibilities: The Atlanta Rainbows, the Cleveland Gardeners , and the Chicago Songbirds.

I think the movement will change direction when they encounter sports fans (likely some of them being Native American sports fans) that are against the opinion of the "movement".

“We’ll never change the name. It’s simple. NEVER.”

That’s what Redskins owner Daniel Snyder told USA Today Sports Thursday, with the added caveat, “you can use caps.”

There’s a debate brewing—yet again—about whether the name of Washington’s football team is racist. Of course it is, says Michael Tomasky.

                    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/06/01/the-racist-redskins.html

This is the man who gave the Washington Redskins their name. He was one of the most despicable racists in the American sporting arena of the entire 20th century. He thought Redskins was funny, just as he thought the war paint and feather headdress he made the head coach wear were funny. And this is the legacy that current Redskins owner Dan Snyder wants to uphold?

Ridiculous! I'm Irish and I don't have a problem with Notre Dame and their ludicrous logo! Just silly.
