  • [Pictures] Knott's Berry Farm, August 2011

Starting off for now with pre-inside the the park photos from the night before actually went in, followed by a handy overview of the park as currently exists (in my opinion anyway).

Visitor comment left at the Chicken Dinner restaurant by Mr. and Mrs. Art Linklatter

Custom-made Stetson owned by Walter Knott

    Boysenberry Tart

Old mill stone display behind the main row of stores

    The George Washington fireplace

Photo of the original, which Walter and Cordelia visited at some point and were inspired by

    Hooray Halloween Tinkerbell!

That pretty much covers the first night...lots more photos to come later on/in coming days. For now, a brief overview of both the good and the bad inside the park and out.

    THE GOOD:
    • How not crowded Ghost Town is, or really, the whole park, on a summer Monday...endlessly relaxing and slow-paced doubtless compared to Disneyland on the same day.
    • General quality of food and different offerings of snacks, plus variety.
    • Amount of specific, unique stores selling different (non cheesy theme park) merchandise: magic store, gun and knife store, fossils and geodes, Native American stores, leather store, many more.
    • Amount of unheralded, 'surprise' displays and peek-ins in stores and buildings.
    • Very friendly employees/ride workers and performers.
    • The Mystery Lodge: great performance and great effects, not matched by Disney in terms of mix of a live show with effects.
    • Added/cleaned up segments of the log ride including a 'new' to me starfield/night sky and full moon after the drop in darkness and nighttime forest scene
    • Seeing haunt mazes and prep going on in odd corners of the park...so excited!
    • The music/ambiance of lights at Camp Snoopy at night: was fun and well-done, some good surprises there too and good ambiance.
    • The saloon show/performers at the Calico Saloon
    • Ghost Town and Camp Snoopy area music loops/ambiance
    THE LESS-GOOD/BAD:
    • Those really ugly giant Pepsi bottle recycling containers. Recycling is good of course, but those things just stand out like a sore thumb, especially standing outside a well-themed western building....Disneyland wins in terms of themed garbage cans
    • The 'roaring 20's'/coaster area of the park truly is bland and ugly. No two ways about it, especially when not disguised with Haunt decorations, actors, and fog. It is the true version of what people complained about DCA's pier being before the sweeping changes: not at all charming, utilitarian, and ugly.
    • The writing on the western stunt show: occasionally cringe-worthy in terms of being broad/cheap laughs/easy stereotypes, but still on the whole it is good they still have one and the performers give it their all.
    • Lack of anything in terms of a more mid-grade 'dark ride', and the Kingdom of the Dinosaurs/Bear-y Tales building going unused.
That is kind of the overview, and more photos of the park itself to come....thanks for reading!

That "starfield/night sky" effect on the log ride has been there a couple of years. It's actually scenes and effect from KOD that were repurposed there.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

Hmm, I have been last year as well and didn't recall seeing it, they must have improved the effect or it was turned off for some reason last time...good they were able to save a little from Kingdom of the Dinosaurs anyway, but I wish the rest would come back, or at least more of it.

A few more from the Chicken Dinner restaurant, morning of visit:

Out to wait for the park to open...

          And in we go!

First ride, of course, was the classic Calico Mine Ride.

Next up, it's neighbor, the Timber Mountain Log Ride.

More to come soon, with details of Ghost Town and the Western Trails Museum

And now (finally ) the continuation of this, with more of Ghost Town...

The Jersey Lilly wasn't open, but a look inside.

              Inside the Bottle House

              Performance inside the Calico Saloon

Inside the General Store. Not very safe

An old photo, stuck behind merchandise racks

And now, a brief sidetrack....as it was good to see the excellent Knott's Preserved book in the park and available, but not quite...optimal....display of it in most stores. Methinks some here might wish to say something about suggestions for that if have contact with the park

My favorite of the current peek-in's, with a nifty application of the Pepper's Ghost effect

This peek in (near the bank) is sadly in not as good a shape...more generic mannequin style figures as opposed to the carved style seen elsewhere, very dusty, some props seemingly missing...but have a feeling not many people venture over and look at it, due to location and not being obvious it is in there.

I miss you, Doll Factory. Work was underway in here...making the base level floor, looked like, all normal elements removed. Soon......

A sign you're not at Disneyland

Lunchtime! And was very tasty, too.

Kind of wish they sold this poster...this one was on display only.

More photos to come, with Boot Hill, the Western Trails museum, and more of ghost town + nighttime...thanks for looking!
