  • Trip Report Knott's Berry Farm MiceChat event - last ride on the Calico Mine Ride!

Firstly, thank you to all on the MiceChat crew, notably Dusty and Fishy, and all the amazing guests and Knott's support staff for the evening event! The food was top notch and very tasty and abundant, and great historical and forward-looking presentations both before the promised rides on the attraction itself. My party spent the day at Knott's prior to the event since separate admission required, but the event ticket was a steal and a great value - well worth it.

To start off, here are some videos:

Good to see the 'ghosts of Ghost Town' still occupy some rocking chairs on the upper level of the hotel building.

Boysenberries adorn the park entrance/exit gates.

Chicken Dinner Restaurant 'waterfall room', also known as my favorite area to sit when dining there.

Very cool retro stained glass window in the gun/knife shop near the Bird Cage theater.

One of the hand-made churros for sale at the park now available - pricey compared to normal price point, but well worth it. Flavor and texture readily beat Disneyland's frozen, premade Tio Pepe variety. Really enjoyable new food offering.

All hail the catawampus - long may it moo.

    More to come of course!

The bears were moving again? This month? Do they only turn them on upon request?

Some more shots from around the Farm -

I always smile at the detail of the hangman's noose on the edge of Ghost Town - a detail Disneyland wouldn't include likely ever.

Inside the undertaker's office, a nifty Pepper's Ghost illusion waits:

Best-themed amusement park restroom entrance? Could be!

And now, one disappointing aspect - as I recall when visited Knott's when much younger and Mystery Lodge/Bigfoot Rapids were brand new, the above-pictured tracks were distinct clear Bigfoot/Sasquatch tracks leading to the raft ride. Why fill them in but leave them so plainly visible..? Was it a tripping hazard, somehow? It was a minor bit of themeing sure but I remember liking it as a kid and went looking to see them specifically this time, disappointed to see it so shoddily covered over. I haven't been on the rafts in ages - do they still play the supposed Bigfoot growls in the caverns section...? The carving of him still lurks behind the Mystery Lodge waterfall, but very hard to see even if looking directly for it.

Great photos! I always enjoy looking at your photography (the recent photos from Disney World were a treat to look through).

The MiceChat event at Knott's looks like it was a lot of fun. Though riding the attraction with the lights on, even once, seems like it would have destroyed the illusion of the ride for me. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Garner Holt does as great a job with the Mine Train ride as they did with the Timber Mountain Log Ride.

Look like we will see that old lift gear that cam off the chain lift.
It will be great if put on outside or in gloy hole

I think the growl sounds are turned off. It seems that Bigfoot Rapids is following the same pattern as Wacky Soap Box Racers did - most theming and effects going away. Like when Wacky Box no longer had the animation, trap doors, fog effects, and Catnip Junction in it's later years, Bigfoot no longer has the growl sounds, waterfalls, etc..

That may be an apt comparison, if a sad one...I hope they do at some point even do a 'simple' refresh of Bigfoot and tweak it to be fully functional and live up a little bit to having the name of the creature in the attraction.

Very true and I agree. Bigfoot Rapids wasn't nearly as detailed as Wacky Box but those few details that were there in 1988 are disappearing. Personally I miss the fog/mist in the last tunnel just before the trip ends. The ride's main waterfall was turned off after a guest sued the park for getting his expensive camera wet – ridiculous! Yet that's why the waterfall is turned off from what I hear.

Next time you're at the Farm, write a letter about Bigfoot Rapid's lack of the waterfall, mist effects, and sound effects at the Information building by the exit. Those letters, good and bad, go straight to the top and are not ignored. If you've got an issue with anything at Knott's, write a note at Information. Seriously you can make a difference.

For those of you who are expecting to see Bigfoot on Bigfoot Rapids, there was no room in the budget to add a monster to the attraction upon its opening. However, when Mystery Lodge was constructed nearby, the ride's designers scuplted a Bigfoot character within the nearby waterfall. He's there, hiding behind the water and just barely visible.
