  • [Question] Copyrighted characters in Vegas

So yesterday as I was walking to Ceasers palace I saw a number of people dressed as disney characters and others. Has anyone else seen this and has it always been going on? Ive never seen anyone do it up until now

I live in Las Vegas and these characters have sprung up within the past year or so. I'm sure there are some copyright issues because a lot of the costumes are very poor knock-offs to get around that. I'm sure it also has to do with "asking" for money. If I wear my Belle outfit to the strip, pose for pictures and someone happens to "tip" then it's a loophole. I have heard they are trying to do away with them, which is unfortunate in my opinion.

Yes, that's what they do in a nutshell. Some costumes are actually pretty good. I saw a couple transformers, but I have seen some pretty bad imitations like Mickey, Minnie, and Homer Simpson. You do still see the classic pan handler as well as musicians.

I was there Dec 6th and 7th (I've been lazy at posting my photos) and saw some, but not too many. Apparently, the cold weather may keep some of them away.

Sorry Vegas, you're getting the Hollywood Boulevard spillover. For decades, LA has had over a dozen costumed characters at a time hanging out in front of or near the Chinese Theater. They can't ask for a tip, but they can shake a change purse to hint at it. If they do happen to ask for money, then it's off to the clink with 'em as such panhandling is illegal. It's amazing, but these costumed folk do make a living as a character almost seven days a week and the rivalries for a tourist's attention and wallet has brought some of them to outright brawls with one another.

On a recent trip to New York, I spotted a few hanging around Times Square. I first met the Naked Cowboy on Hollywood Boulevard, but he's now plying his trade (and the franchise) in Times Square. Here's a pic of the Santa Mickey and Minnie I found near Rockefeller Center. Take a pic with the mouse and fill his stocking with a tip!

                  Re: Copyrighted characters in Vegas

They were there when we did the Labor Day trip... 2 years ago I think...

Basically the old van broke down, we had to rent a van for the weekend, and I refused to just leave a rental in my driveway so we took the kids to Hoover Dam. Anyhow the kids took a pic with a halfway decent Hello Kitty. I ALMOST did the kids with the parrots in front of Maragaretta Ville but he wanted $30.

I'd rather have the bad costumes then the porn flyers.

As to Hollywood, we did that last Mother's Day. There was a cool exhibit on Da Vinci at the Hollywood Highland complex. So we took the kids down. I'm tempted to take them back on a random day with $30 and let them pose with Transformers, Star Wars, Princesses etc. The costumes were pretty good. The "cool" thing is that they'd interact with the kids even if it wasn't a picture. Catwoman (famous for flipping off freebie photographers) and Batman talked the kids up for a good 5 minutes. They refused money because my camera wasn't working. As to the "scary" costumes, they went out of their way to hide the bloody props etc. So all in all it was pretty cool!

It makes it look trashy. Wait, it's the Las Vegas strip.....nevermind.

I also live in Vegas and I absolutely hate them! Their costumes are so ridiculously generic and we have seen more than a few that are out there posing with very adult and inappropriate props. My husband is very tempted to take pics of them and submit them to Disney. Even though Vegas is promoted towards adults there are plenty of children that walk the Strip with their parents and I would never let my kids pose with them.

We have seen Mickey, Minnie, Buzz and two different Woodys. My husband is a cab driver and has seen the Mickey slouching on the floor pretending to be drunk with a huge plastic beer bottle. We have also seen another character holding a giant blunt! Seriously??? It really disgusts me.

Re: Copyrighted characters in Vegas..thanks Hollyweird.

The LAPD broke up this matter about a year ago for panhandling, trademark & copyright matters, blocking the sidewalks, pickpocketing, public intoxication, battery, bunko, prostitution, complaints by local merchants and many public nuisance violations. These folks would actively try to get in your private photos with friends and then they would strongarm you to pay them for their time and effort for their efforts. It was gangsterism and anti-Hollywood. Many of them got crazy because they're violent among themselves over 'turf' wars on the public sidewalks.... too funny, but SAD! I fear there will be more of this with the worsening ecomony and it's dramatic fleecing of our nice tourists to our cities.

I work down on the Las Vegas strip, so I see these characters all the time.

They swarm the Las Vegas Strip. It would be tolerable to a degree if it were not for the ones doing darker, or un-Disney things in the costumes.

Mickey slouching on the floor pretending to be drunk with a huge plastic beer bottle
I believe there are two different drunk Mickey's. There's also a matching Minnie. They lay around "passed out drunk" clutching various alcohol containers.

I've also caught sight of a Buzz and Woody dancing a bit intimately, in a techno/club kind of way.

One of the things I tend to catch that drives me crazy is seeing Mickey and Minnie walking around with their heads tucked under their arms, in full view of children. Sure, Vegas isn't exactly a family destination, but families still come here.

The "Golden Path" for the Characters seems to be between the MGM Grand and on down to the Venetian.

I snapped a photo of one of the drunk Mickey's the other day.

If you go downtown to Freemont street at night, they are everywhere. It reminds me exactly of Hollywood Blvd. Characters from Disney to Austin powers to robot man. Even Michael Jackson moon walking around. Its quit entertaining in a way. They do get upset however if you take a picture of them without paying. I've seen them chase people down for it
